University Hospitals (UH) in Cleveland, OH, and Nashville-based Centerre Healthcare Corporation announced today a joint venture to construct a comprehensive inpatient rehabilitation hospital in Beachwood, OH.

Scheduled for completion in October 2012, the state-of-the-art facility will provide physical, occupational and speech language therapy along with specialized rehabilitation nursing and a wide range of clinical services for patients recovering from complex neurological, orthopaedic and cardiac conditions as well as traumatic injuries.  The facility will also provide patients with highly specialized therapy programs such as a dedicated brain injury unit and specialized stroke program.

"University Hospitals has built an integrated system of medical centers and an expansive network of physicians offering a full range of services and specialty care throughout Northeast Ohio," said Thomas F. Zenty III, UH Chief Executive Officer. "Adding this new rehabilitation hospital to the UH system ensures that patients who need intensive physical rehabilitation are receiving the highest quality of care that is the hallmark of our nationally recognized health system."

The freestanding hospital will be the most technologically advanced rehabilitation facility in the United States while providing a patient-centered environment. New features include a gymnasium focusing on accelerated recovery, training suites that focus on the activities of daily living, a therapeutic pool and outdoor recreation areas.

Conveniently located on Harvard Road less than two miles from the University Hospitals Ahuja Medical Center campus in Beachwood, the new facility will employ approximately 150 people and bring more jobs and high-quality compassionate care to the community.

"This hospital with specialized rehabilitation clinical expertise will be dedicated to the mission of treating those who have suffered a devastating illness or injury with the goal of each patient returning to his or her home and community at the highest level of independence possible," said Patrick Foster, CEO of Centerre Healthcare. "We are delighted to partner with such a dynamic organization committed to the highest level of patient care."

The Centerre Healthcare-University Hospitals joint venture has selected Cogdell Spencer Inc. as the developer and Earl Swensson Associates, Inc. (ESa) as the architects.
