Fla. lawmakers advance bill on workers' comp drugs; Kan. legislature considers disability changes

A Florida bill would keep doctors from dispensing "repackaged drugs" at higher prices, while the Kansas measure would bar a single agency from assessing a disabled person's needs and then working as the case manager and providing services.

A workers' compensation bill aimed at holding down the cost of prescription drugs to employers passed the Senate Banking and Insurance Committee today. [The sponsor, Sen. Alan Hays] said the bill closes a loophole in the workers' compensation system that lets doctors dispense "repackaged drugs" at huge price markups. ... Opponents of the bill say that while pharmacies can buy drugs in bulk, doctors can't, so it would effectively preclude physician-dispensing (Gentry, 1/19).
