Zambia, Zimbabwe address TB/HIV co-infection

The Center for Global Health Policy's "Science Speaks" blog outlines efforts to fight TB/HIV co-infection in Zambia and Zimbabwe. In Zambia, a partnership among the Centre for Infectious Disease Research in Zambia with funding from PEPFAR and Zambia's Ministry of Health began a pilot program in several prisons to identify and treat prisoners infected with TB or HIV, the blog notes, writing, "A prison service medical directorate has been established and the government is opening more open air prisons to ensure infection control." The blog writes that in Zimbabwe, "[t]o respond to the need to scale up [antiretroviral treatment (ART)] access for TB patients, the country is piloting a one-stop shop for co-infected patients where antiretroviral treatment and TB treatment are provided by the same nurse in the same day" (Lubinski, 4/16).
