Leapfrog Group honors John Muir Health's medical centers with "A" for patient safety

The Leapfrog Group, an independent coalition of public and private purchasers of employee health benefits, has honored John Muir Health's Concord and Walnut Creek medical centers with an "A" Hospital Safety Score^SM for the second year in a row. The grades are given based on hospitals' overall success in keeping patients safe from infections, injuries and medical and medication errors.

"This Safety Score^SM truly speaks to the hard work and dedication of our skilled physicians, nurses and staff to continuously improve hospital safety, provide clinical excellence and always put the needs of our patients first."

The Leapfrog Group's Hospital Safety Scores are calculated under the guidance of an expert panel, which includes representatives from a number of institutions, including Harvard, Stanford, John Hopkins and UCSF, using 26 measures of publicly available hospital safety data. It is the only peer-reviewed hospital rating system in the United States.

Of the 2,514 general hospitals issued a Hospital Safety Score, 780 earned an "A," 638 earned a "B," 932 earned a "C," 148 earned a "D" and 16 earned an "F." In California, 35 percent of hospitals received an "A" grade. Scores can be viewed on the Hospital Safety Score^SM website, www.hospitalsafetyscore.org.
