NBTY named silver winner in Most Socially Responsible Company of the Year category

NBTY, Inc., ("NBTY") a leading global manufacturer and distributor of high-quality vitamins and nutritional supplements, has been named a silver winner in the category "Most Socially Responsible Company of the Year" by the Best in Biz Awards.

NBTY leverages multiple avenues to channel product, monetary and other contributions to ensure that the help it provides has a wide berth. While many of its donations are focused within the U.S., through partnerships NBTY's reach extends far beyond U.S. borders. NBTY takes a multifaceted approach to the contributions it makes over the course of a year, including but not limited to: support of disaster relief and recovery efforts, the work that it does to manufacture, label and distribute vitamins to millions of children through Vitamin Angels, and the extensive work of NBTY Helping Hands, the company's 501(c)(3) non-profit affiliate, which in 2012 donated substantial funds to charitable organizations benefiting children, the hungry, the homeless, veterans and the disabled, as well as myriad other causes.

Best in Biz received more than 500 entries this year, from a wide array of public and private companies of all sizes and from a variety of industries and geographic regions in the U.S. and Canada. Winners were determined by an independent panel of 50 judges from top-tier news, business and technology publications, as well as broadcast outlets and analyst firms, such as Bloomberg, Businessweek, Chicago Tribune, Computerworld, Crain's New York Business, Dallas Morning News, Fast Company, Financial Times, Fortune, Inc. Magazine, Reuters, San Francisco Chronicle, USA Today and many others.

"I was impressed by the social conscience shown in several of the entries," said Kat Bryant, associate editor at Phoenix Business Journal, who served on the Best in Biz Awards 2013 judging panel. "Not all big businesses are just out to make money these days; an increasing number are looking to make a difference — within their own ranks, in the communities they serve directly, and even worldwide. It does my heart good."

"We're honored by this recognition and value our role in being a good corporate citizen in the global community," said NBTY CEO Jeff Nagel.  "We recognize the importance of thinking beyond the workplace and lending a hand to our home communities.  It is part of our culture here at NBTY to focus on every aspect of wellness, and that includes corporate social responsibility. Our Associates have a tremendous social conscience that makes a real, tangible difference in the lives of people worldwide."
