Bitplane, an Oxford Instruments company and the world leader in 2 to 4D image visualisation, analysis and interpretation, have presented Dr Weimiao Yu with his prize for his winning entry in the inaugural Excellence Awards. Steve Chai, Bitplane, presented Dr Yu with a commemorative certificate and a MacBook Pro. Dr Yu’s winning entry focused on the analysis of cell protrusions during migration; a phenomenon that is not well understood and is thought to play a key role in immune response and metastasis formation, for example.

The Excellence Awards focus on identifying and rewarding the best image analysis tool or application. It is open to all commercial and non-commercial entities and individuals. The winner was selected by the public and an expert judging panel made up of Dr Carlos Ortiz de Solórzano, Dr Simon Watkins and Dr Kota Miura.

Dr Luciano Lucas, Product Manager and Head of Sales for Bitplane, said, “The inaugural Excellence Awards was a truly open and global event. We received 43 original entries, from 12 countries, using 9 different software tools, which were reviewed by nearly 6,000 visitors to the website. We have identified and showcased several great new tools and applications during this year’s event. We look forward to helping introducing more novel solutions to the community in the coming years.”

Dr. Carlos Ortiz de Solórzano, Senior Scientist at the Center for Applied Medical Research (Pamplona, Spain) and a judge in Excellence Awards said: “I was impressed by the quality of the presentations, and particularly so by Dr. Yu’s work on tracking of cell protrusions during cell migration. This is indeed a relevant piece of work that looks at the problem of cell migration from a new perspective that takes into account not only the dynamics of cell migration, but also the way the cell interacts with its environment while migrating. Dr. Yu’s method cleanly dissects the movement of the cell from the assembly and disassembly of elongated protrusions, and he does so using a clever image analysis algorithm.”
