The article implies a link but is it in fact that someone with the condition is more likely to be a heavy smoker or the inverse. The stats simply demonstrate a relationship not the direct relation or cause and effect.  My son has the condition and advises that he debends on the smokes to calm himself down. He would not agree that the smoking influences his symptoms in the negative way, he sees it as a positive way.
