In pharmaceutical development and manufacturing, monitoring reactions in real time—and adjusting instantly to changes in process conditions—is no longer optional. Process Analytical Technology (PAT) has become both a scientific necessity and a regulatory expectation.

At the heart of this approach is the integration of real-time analytical techniques with process control systems, a capability that underpins both PAT and Quality by Design (QbD) frameworks.
In this article, Bruker’s Fourier 80 benchtop Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectrometer was coupled with a PAT software platform to deliver continuous, on-line, and in-line reaction monitoring, paired with automated process control.
The results show how benchtop NMR can serve as a practical, information-rich PAT solution, offering the insights needed to strengthen process understanding, improve control, and increase automation in both pharmaceutical development and production.
