Ovarian cancer molecular updates

In a new study a genetic mutation was found in the most common form of ovarian cancer. This according to the US scientists could pave the way for a more effective treatment of the disease. The detailed genetic map already helped scientists identify existing drugs with the potential for treating the mutations found in ovarian cancer tumors and also identified mutations that could respond to new drugs.

Elderly care budget faces cuts: Age UK report

According to a report by charity Age UK, spending on social care for the elderly has been cut by around £600m this year. The research was based on 139 council responses under the Freedom of Information Act, and has uncovered an 8.4% cut to elderly care budgets.

The longer the men smoked, the greater the risk, said Stacey Kenfield of the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston, whose study appears in the Journal of the American Medical Association. It takes place at the New Walk Museum from 15 July -28 August.

"Rising food prices, hovering near record highs after a spike in grain costs, are changing diets particularly in developing countries such as Kenya, according to a survey issued by charity Oxfam on Wednesday," Reuters reports. The survey was conducted in 17 countries.

According to the latest figures, women over the age of 80 are at the highest risk of falling and need home care. Figures released from the NHS Information Centre ahead of Falls Awareness Week revealed that women over the age of 80 accounted for 30.9 per cent of all fall-related admissions.

Screening unhelpful in lowering deaths from ovarian cancer

New research shows that women regularly screened for ovarian cancer are just as likely to die from the disease. This comes as no surprise as there are still no adequate detection methods, says Ovarian Cancer Australia. Of the 1,200 Australian women diagnosed with ovarian cancer each year, 800 die, often because it is diagnosed too late to be treated.
