Researchers use new imaging technique to view microvessels in the brains of living mice

Researchers at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine have identified in mice a previously unknown protective mechanism by which the smallest blood vessels remove blood clots and other blockages from the brain. The findings provide insights into mechanisms that may be involved in age-related cognitive decline, Alzheimer's disease and recovery from stroke.

Research findings offer possible applications in diagnosis and treatment of patients with atherosclerosis

Researchers from Boston University School of Medicine have shown that use of magnetic resonance imaging in an animal model can non-invasively identify dangerous plaques. The findings, which appear in the May issue of Circulation Cardiovascular Imaging, offer possible applications in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with atherosclerosis.

Psychologists and neuroscientists study link between brain volume reduction and anorexia

A team of American psychologists and neuroscientists have found that adult brain volume, which can be reduced by Anorexia Nervosa, can be regained. The research, published in the International Journal of Eating Disorders, revealed that through specialist treatment patients with the eating disorder can reverse this symptom and regain grey matter volume.

Researchers use CASL MRI technique to map cerebral blood flow patterns in schizophrenic patients

Researchers in Germany have used a magnetic resonance imaging technique called continuous arterial spin labeling to map cerebral blood flow patterns in schizophrenic patients quickly and without using radiation or contrast agents. Their findings appear in the online edition and July printed issue of the journal Radiology.

NIDDK awards Albert Einstein College of Medicine $9.5M for continuation of Diabetes Research and Training Center

The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has awarded Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University a five-year, $9.5 million grant for the continuation of its Diabetes Research and Training Center (DRTC). The DRTC was also awarded a $632,000 supplemental grant for equipment and additional pilot and feasibility studies through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), bringing total NIH support to $10,177,000.

Boston Scientific collaborates with Philips, Siemens to offer integrated imaging systems

Boston Scientific Corporation today announced collaborations with Philips Healthcare and Siemens Medical Solutions to enable the use of its iLab® Ultrasound Imaging System with the Philips Allura™ Xper and the Siemens AXIOM™ Artis and Artis™ zee interventional X-ray systems. Intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) technology is designed to provide physicians a 360-degree view inside the heart and coronary vessels to assist with diagnosis and to generate a more accurate image of the diseased vessels than is possible with angiography alone.

New $7M I-LABS MEG Brain Imaging Center opened to study infants, young children

The University of Washington Institute for Learning & Brain Sciences announced today the launch of a multi-year, multimillion-dollar initiative to foster new brain research discoveries and insights into how and when children learn. Washington State Governor Christine Gregoire, University of Washington President Mark Emmert and I-LABS co-directors Dr. Patricia Kuhl and Dr. Andrew Meltzoff officially opened the new $7 million I-LABS MEG Brain Imaging Center on the University of Washington campus, hosting the first brain imaging device in the world optimized for neuroscientific study in infants and young children.
