Elective endovascular aneurysm repair benefits men more than women

A study published in the April issue of Journal of Vascular Surgery reports that women derive less benefit than men from elective endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA's). FDA seeks expert advice on risks and benefits of MoM hip systems

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today announced that it is seeking expert scientific and clinical advice on the risks and benefits of metal-on-metal (MoM) hip systems as well as potential patient and practitioner recommendations on the use of MoM hip systems and the management of patients implanted with such devices. FDA will discuss these issues at a two-day expert advisory panel meeting on June 27-28, 2012.

BMI not linked with either surgical complications or esophageal cancer patient survival

Researchers at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Fla., have found - contrary to previous studies linking inferior outcomes in patients with gastrointestinal malignancies to higher body mass index (BMI) - that in their study of BMI and negative outcomes, there was no such link. They concluded that BMI was not associated with either surgical complications or esophageal cancer patient survival.

Patients with papillary renal cell carcinoma, the second most common kidney cancer subtype, face a low risk of tumour recurrence and cancer-related death after surgery. One-side parathyroid surgery has poorer long-term outcomes

Dr James Norman, MD and his partners at the Norman Parathyroid Center have published a landmark study in this week's Journal of the American College of Surgeons describing how the operation they developed and advocated for more than 19 years has significantly poorer long-term outcomes. The unilateral or "one-side" parathyroid surgical procedure to remove parathyroid tumors from patients suffering from hyperparathyroidism is a dramatic change from the large neck operation that it replaced.
