Wellpartner agrees to provide patients access to low-cost medications using 340B Access Solution

Wellpartner, a nationally recognized provider of pharmacy distribution services, today announced an agreement with Community Health Center La Clinica and Custom Prescription Shoppe Pharmacy to provide patients access to low-cost medications using Wellpartner's 340B Access Solution. The agreement will allow patients who qualify to purchase deeply-discounted prescription medications at Community Health Center La Clinica's newly established in-house pharmacy as well as through a network of retail pharmacies in the area.

PBMs: Post Office plan to end Saturday shipments could boost drug prices

Pharmacy-benefits management companies, including CVS Caremark and Medco, are worried that a U.S. Postal Service plan to end Saturday delivery could raise mail-order drug prices, Bloomberg Businessweek reports. "The pharmacy-benefits management companies, which shipped more than 150 million drug orders last year, joined retailer Crate and Barrel and publishers of small newspapers to challenge the Postal Service and its plan to cut service to save about $3 billion a year." The Post Office is trying to combat a projected $7 billion deficit this year (Keane, 6/21).

"In most states, the passage of the sprawling federal health care overhaul legislation means the poorest will have a better shot at affording health insurance. But in Massachusetts, the law might have the opposite effect. Senator John. F. Kerry, state leaders, and health care advocates met yesterday to discuss a new report that highlights the major differences between the federal and state health care models. The focus of the event quickly turned to the hurdles of implementation and the need to protect the gains Massachusetts has made since 2006. ... The report reveals that ... some Massachusetts residents might end up facing higher premiums" (Lee, 6/22).

PharmaTrust to introduce MedCentre remote pharmacy dispensing machine in UK

PharmaTrust will become the first company to introduce a remote pharmacy dispensing machine into the UK later this year. The Oakville, Ontario-based company announced yesterday at an event at Grocer's Hall in London that it is commencing trials of its MedCentre dispensing technology at five hospitals in the UK. Guests included government representatives, pharmacy stakeholders and media.

The latest survey of U.S. consumers, commissioned by NCR Corporation, shows that patients are increasingly seeking self-service convenience when managing the financial aspects of their healthcare experience. The annual consumer study, conducted by Buzzback Market Research, reveals that more than half (51 percent) of respondents would like to manage their healthcare account by viewing payment history and settling outstanding balances via online and mobile channels.

Tentative deal raises cigarette taxes in NY; Many Iowa hospitals close inpatient psychiatric units

Harvard Medical School, which has suffered financially due in part to a sharp decline in Harvard University's legendary endowment, has successfully negotiated a deal in which Boston's major teaching hospitals will contribute $36 million to the school over three years. The hospital money is a small portion of the medical school's $580 million annual budget, but it may represent a larger turning point in the unusual relationship between the country's top medical school and its prestigious hospital partners.

Walgreens will stay in Caremark's prescription network

Los Angeles Times: Walgreens and Caremark announced Friday "they had settled a dispute that threatened to prevent thousands of people from filling their prescriptions at Walgreens stores." Caremark runs CVS stores and pharmacies. "At issue: the way Caremark, one of the nation's biggest prescription-plan operators, prices discounts for prescriptions filled at Walgreens pharmacies, which often compete fiercely with nearby CVS stores nationwide.
