Insulin is a hormone that is needed to convert glucose, starches and other food into energy needed for daily life. Insulin allows cells to use glucose for fuel and is secreted by beta cells in the islets of Langerhans. The release of insulin from the pancreas is stimulated by increased blood glucose, vagal nerve stimulation, and other factors. Insulin is obtained from various animals and available in a variety of preparations. Commercial insulin preparations differ in a number of ways, including differences in the animal species from which they are obtained; their purity, concentration, and solubility; and the time of onset and duration of their biologic action. An oral hypoglycemic agent is not a form of insulin therapy.

Exercise may improve cognitive function

Moderate physical activity performed in midlife or later appears to be associated with a reduced risk of mild cognitive impairment, whereas a six-month high-intensity aerobic exercise program may improve cognitive function in individuals who already have the condition, according to two reports in the January issue of Archives of Neurology, one of the JAMA/Archives journals.

Gerresheimer Group sets up new medical plastic systems production facility in Brazil

The Gerresheimer Group has set up a new facility for medical plastic systems in Indaiatuba (Brazil). The plant is to commence operations early in 2010. On the basis of a long-term cooperation agreement with Novo Nordisk, components will be produced with state-of-the-art technology for insulin pen systems for diabetics.

Arcadia Capital Advisors files intent to purchase remaining CPEX shares at $14 per share

CPEX Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today confirmed that Arcadia Capital Advisors, LLC and its principal Richard Rofé, who hold approximately 12% of outstanding shares, have filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) notice of intention of Mr. Rofé to make an unsolicited contingent offer to purchase the remaining shares of common stock of CPEX for $14.00 per share. Mr. Rofé indicated that any offer would require the CPEX Board of Directors to redeem the Rights under CPEX Shareholder Rights Plan.

Immune cells causes inflammation in thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy

A cell type that causes significant scarring in lung disease appears to have a similar effect in Graves' disease, University of Michigan Health System researchers have found. The cells, called fibrocytes, are present at a higher than normal frequency in patients with Graves' disease, according to a new study, the first to associate fibrocytes with this autoimmune disease.

Non-insulin-dependent patients with type 2 diabetes do not benefit from glucose self-monitoring

Contrary to the widely-held belief, there is no proof that non-insulin-dependent patients with type 2 diabetes benefit from glucose self-monitoring. Moreover, it remains unclear whether an additional benefit is displayed by the blood test compared to the urine test or vice versa, in other words, whether one or other of the tests might offer an advantage to patients.

Closer to the root cause of diabetes

A new research discovery published online in the FASEB Journal (http://www.fasebj.org) may change the perception and treatment of diabetes. That's because scientists have moved closer toward correcting the root cause of the disease rather than managing its symptoms. Specifically researchers identified a protein (G6PD protein) and its antioxidant product (NAPDH) that both prevent the death and promote the growth of cells which produce and release insulin in the pancreas (beta cells).
