Insulin is a hormone that is needed to convert glucose, starches and other food into energy needed for daily life. Insulin allows cells to use glucose for fuel and is secreted by beta cells in the islets of Langerhans. The release of insulin from the pancreas is stimulated by increased blood glucose, vagal nerve stimulation, and other factors. Insulin is obtained from various animals and available in a variety of preparations. Commercial insulin preparations differ in a number of ways, including differences in the animal species from which they are obtained; their purity, concentration, and solubility; and the time of onset and duration of their biologic action. An oral hypoglycemic agent is not a form of insulin therapy.

But new research comparing the signs of metabolic syndrome in professional baseball and football players, presented at the American College of Gastroenterology's 74th Annual Scientific Meeting in San Diego, reveals that the larger professional athletes - specifically football linemen - may encounter future health problems despite their rigorous exercise routines.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is often caused by abdominal obesity, which is also one of the main causes of insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome. The latter, in turn, is an important cardiovascular risk factor, and has been found to be associated with the presence of carotid atherosclerotic lesions.

Faster insulin absorption for varying insulin doses and PH20 concentrations demonstrated

Halozyme Therapeutics, Inc. today announced dose response study results that demonstrated faster insulin absorption and increased peak insulin concentrations after co-administration of its recombinant hyaluronidase enzyme (rHuPH20 or PH20) with regular human insulin and with insulin lispro. The enhanced absorption effects were observed at clinically relevant insulin doses across a broad range of PH20 concentrations.

Dose optimization data from Tolerx's Phase 2 clinical study of otelixizumab

Tolerx, Inc., a biopharmaceutical company developing novel therapies intended to treat diabetes, other autoimmune diseases and cancer by specifically modulating T-cell activity, today presented dose optimization data from its Phase 2 clinical study of otelixizumab in subjects with type 1 diabetes. Otelixizumab is a targeted T-cell immunomodulator currently being evaluated in DEFEND, a Phase 3 clinical study in subjects with new-onset autoimmune type 1 diabetes.

InHealth awards Southern California, Northwestern and Stanford Universities $1.4M as research grants

The Institute for Health Technology Studies (InHealth) has awarded three new research grants totaling more than $1.4 million to investigators at the University of Southern California, Northwestern University, and Stanford University. The funding will support three separate studies that will examine the social and economic impact of therapeutic medical devices, as well as the device innovation process.

Positive results from Isis Pharmaceuticals' ISIS 113715 Phase 2 study in type 2 diabetes patients

Isis Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced positive top-line results from a Phase 2 study evaluating the safety and efficacy of ISIS 113715 in patients with type 2 diabetes. ISIS 113715 is a novel insulin sensitizer that reduces the expression of protein tyrosine phosphatase-1B (PTP-1B). The study showed consistent and statistically significant reductions in multiple short and intermediate measures of glucose control.

Northwest Biotherapeutics announces long-term data from Phase I and Phase I/II clinical trials of DCVax-Brain

Northwest Biotherapeutics, Inc. today announced further long-term follow-up data, for the period from January through September 2009, from its prior Phase I and Phase I/II clinical trials conducted at UCLA with DCVax®-Brain in patients with Glioblastoma multiforme ("GBM"). GBM is the most rapid and lethal type of brain cancer. During the update period, only one of the twenty patients treated with DCVax®-Brain (in addition to standard of care) died, and that patient had survived for nearly 7 years (80.5 months).
