UK aims to lead with cutting-edge radiation therapy

The UK is all set to launch its run into the future as the undisputed leader in the field of personalized and effective radiation therapy. The proposal is undergirded by a whopping £56 million, which will be used to set up and fund advanced radiation therapy research by a new collaborative setup, Cancer Research UK RadNet, over five years. This is the largest sum ever invested by this organization into radiotherapy research.

A protein that breast, lung and other cancers use to promote their spread--or metastasis--to the brain, has been identified by a team led by Weill Cornell Medicine and New York-Presbyterian investigators. The protein, CEMIP, will now be a focus of efforts to predict, prevent and treat brain metastases, which are a frequent cause of cancer deaths.

Two-hormone combo test predicts prostate cancer risk

New research presented at the NCRI Cancer Conference, 2019, shows that free testosterone and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-I), when present at high levels in combination, show a higher risk of prostate cancer in men. This finding is important since both these factors can be counteracted, to possibly reduce the risk.

Deaths from liver cancer increased 3-fold over 20 years in England

Liver cancer is rapidly moving up the cancer killer ranks in England, according to a new study that is to be presented at the 201th NCRI Cancer Conference on November 2, 2019. Both the number of new cases and the mortality rate from hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), have tripled, over the period from 1997 to 2016. HCC is the most common form of liver cancer. Moreover, a quarter of these cases occur among the least privileged fifth of society.
