This year’s EuroEcho-Imaging conference in Istanbul, Turkey (11-14 December) will see global medical imaging manufacturer, Esaote, showcase Prevention Suite: a unique package of ultrasound imaging modalities for both cardiac and vascular investigations. Prevention Suite provides clinicians with a wide range of tools for assessing a patient’s risk of cardiovascular disease quickly and reliably, often before symptoms occur. Sumitomo receives FDA 510(k) clearance for Proton Therapy System

Sumitomo Heavy Industries, Ltd. announced today that it had received US FDA 510(k) clearance of its Proton Therapy System. It is the first 510(k) cleared medical device for Sumitomo. Proton therapy is a form of radiation therapy, which employs proton beams to kill cancer cells with better dose distribution in comparison with conventional x-rays. Currently 12 facilities are operational and several more are under construction in the United States, and the U.S. proton therapy market is expected to expand in the future.

Genetic research that will be published tomorrow in the New England Journal of Medicine suggests to Dr. André Lacroix, professor at the University of Montreal, that clinicians' understanding and treatment of a form of Cushing's syndrome affecting both adrenal glands will be fundamentally changed, and that moreover, it might be appropriate to begin screening for the genetic mutations that cause this form of the disease.

Penn Medicine incorporates automated prediction tool that aims to reduce hospital readmissions

An automated prediction tool which identifies newly admitted patients who are at risk for readmission within 30 days of discharge has been successfully incorporated into the electronic health record of the University of Pennsylvania Health System. In March 2013, Eric Wagner told his wife to call 9-1-1 because he was feeling the worst that he had ever felt. He was rushed by EMS to University Hospitals (UH) Ahuja Medical Center, and then airlifted to UH Case Medical Center, where brain scans showed that he had a ruptured aneurysm, a leaking blister on a blood vessel that was letting blood flow into his brain and causing a stroke.
