FDA approves ISTA's sNDA for BROMDAY ophthalmic anti-inflammatory drug

ISTA Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the Company's supplemental New Drug Application (sNDA) for BROMDAY (bromfenac ophthalmic solution) 0.09% as a once-daily prescription eye drop for the treatment of postoperative inflammation and reduction of ocular pain in patients who have undergone cataract extraction.

The findings, published today in Human Molecular Genetics, could have considerable impact on women in the UK and other western countries, where many start having children at a later age. 2010 AAO-MEACO meeting focuses on genetic medicine

Teva Pharmaceutical announces new data from PreCISe study

Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. today announced new data from the five-year extension of the PreCISe study demonstrating that earlier initiation of treatment with Copaxone (glatiramer acetate injection) in patients presenting with first signs of multiple sclerosis (MS), provided greater effects in delaying conversion to clinically definite MS (CDMS) compared to later treatment initiation after diagnosis of CDMS or after three years on the study.

Hands only CPR effective: New guidelines

According to latest changes made to CPR guidelines rescuers need to start with hard, fast chest presses before giving mouth-to-mouth. The change is termed as “the simplest step first” for traditional CPR, said Dr Michael Sayre, an emergency doctor at Ohio State University Medical Centre and co-author of the guidelines issued by the American Heart Association.

Genentech, Inc., a member of the Roche Group, and Biogen Idec today announced 24-week results from a phase II study of ocrelizumab in patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS), the most common form of the disease. Pericytes regulate blood-brain barrier

While the blood-brain barrier (BBB) protects the brain from harmful chemicals occurring naturally in the blood, it also obstructs the transport of drugs to the brain. In an article in Nature scientists at the Swedish medical university Karolinska Institutet now present a potential solution to the problem. The key to the BBB is a cell-type in the blood vessel walls called pericytes, and the researchers hope that their findings will one day contribute to new therapies for diseases like Alzheimer's and stroke.
