Hyperion Therapeutics, Inc. today announced that it has acquired worldwide rights to the investigational drug Ravicti from Ucyclyd Pharma, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Medicis Pharmaceutical Corporation.

No added benefit from retigabine therapy in adults with epileptic seizures

The drug retigabine was approved in March 2011 as add-on therapy for adults with epileptic seizures. In an early benefit assessment pursuant to the "Act on the Reform of the Market for Medicinal Products" (AMNOG), the German Institute for Quality and Efficiency in Health Care (IQWiG) examined whether retigabine offers an added benefit compared with the present standard therapy.

A new study in the April issue of Anesthesiology analyzed inherited (genetic) differences in how the body responds to its own morphine-like chemicals and pain-relieving opioid drugs, and whether they influence breast cancer survival. Preclinical animal studies have suggested that opioids may promote tumor growth.

Study shows gender gap in medication management

Women use more prescription drugs than men; yet they are not prescribed proper amounts. In a new study presented at Women's Health 2012: The 20th Annual Congress by Medco Health Solutions, Inc. and the Society for Women's Health Research (SWHR) women are prescribed more drugs than men, have poorer adherence rates to using the drugs than men, and, perhaps most surprisingly, lag behind men in receiving the appropriate drugs for their documented diseases.

FDA ODAC votes in favour of GSK's Votrient

GlaxoSmithKline announced today that the Oncologic Drugs Advisory Committee (ODAC) to the US FDA voted 11 to 2 that evidence from clinical studies support a favourable benefit – risk assessment for use of Votrient in treating patients with advanced soft tissue sarcoma who have received prior chemotherapy, noting that those with gastrointestinal stromal tumours (GIST) and adipocytic sarcomas were not included in the Phase III trial.
