Radiologists who interpret more mammograms and spend some time reading diagnostic mammograms do better at determining which suspicious breast lesions are cancer, according to a new report published online on February 22 and in print in the April issue of Radiology.

Gene that causes rare breast cancer identified

Researchers have found that a rare but hard-to-treat form of breast cancer is driven by a newly discovered gene. The gene ZNF703 is the first oncogene to be discovered in five years, and it could lead to more effective treatments down the road, Cancer Research UK said.

CDC maps least and most active Americans

A new government commissioned study has found that Colorado has one of the most active populations in the country and Kentucky has one of the least active. This study is the third in a series of county-focused reports by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The first two looked at diabetes and obesity rates, says Ann Albright, director of the CDC’s Division of Diabetes Translation.

Breast cancer cases on the rise in Japan

The number of women diagnosed with breast cancer per year in the seven major markets is forecast to increase by 13% over the next decade, finds independent healthcare analyst, Datamonitor.* However, in Japan, breast cancer incidence rates will rise by approximately 24% to 2019 to reach 56,400 cases, compared to 45,600 cases in 2010.

Biologist investigates CAPV-EAE population for hereditary breast and ovary cancer

Between 5 % and 10 % of breast cancer cases are hereditary, arising because the patient inherits from the father or mother a mutation in a gene that is susceptible to causing the illness. BRCA1 and BRCA2 have already been identified as two of the genes to be monitored. It is estimated that 30 % of hereditary breast cancer cases are due to mutations in one of these two genes.

FRC commends amendment to prevent federal funding for Planned Parenthood

Family Research Council praised the U.S. House of Representatives for today approving U.S. Rep. Mike Pence's (R-IN) amendment to prevent any funds made available under the continuing appropriation bill from being provided to Planned Parenthood. Pence and Family Research Council (FRC) President Tony Perkins co-authored an op-ed that ran today in The Daily Caller regarding this amendment.

Planned Parenthood funding sparks passionate debate on House floor

Almost unnoticed in the wars over the federal budget has been a pitched battle over money for Planned Parenthood, which provides contraception, medical services and abortions at 800 clinics around the country. ... At stake is more than $75 million that Planned Parenthood receives to provide family planning assistance to low-income women, money that its opponents say only frees up funds for abortions (Eckholm, 2/17).

Certain uses of terbutaline could lead to maternal heart problems and death, FDA warns

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is warning that terbutaline administered by injection or through an infusion pump should not be used in pregnant women for prevention or prolonged (beyond 48-72 hours) treatment of preterm labor due to the potential for serious maternal heart problems and death. In addition, oral terbutaline tablets should not be used for prevention or treatment of preterm labor.

Study analyses number of mortality rates among Spanish women with breast cancer

Pioneering Spanish provinces in terms of early prevention of breast cancer, such as Navarre and the Basque Country, record lower death rates, although the trend is towards the figures levelling out all over Spain. These are the results of a study carried out by Spanish researchers, which analyses the number of women who died between 1975 and 2005.
