That is the conclusion of a study published early online in Cancer, a peer-reviewed journal of the American Cancer Society. The findings suggest that greater efforts are needed to better understand disparities in breast cancer care and to ensure that all affected women receive equal and effective treatments.

HHS awards $5 million grant to support teen pregnancy prevention programs

The George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services (SPHHS), in partnership with three community-based organizations, has been awarded a five-year, $5 million grant from the Department of Heath and Human Service's (HHS) Office of Adolescent Health. This grant is part of a $155 million commitment by HHS to support the replication of teen pregnancy prevention programs that have been shown to be effective through rigorous research as well as the testing of new, innovative approaches to combating teen pregnancy.

A report released by the United Nations today calls for intensified investment in cost-effective interventions to address the problem of obstetric fistula. The document estimates that at least $750 million is needed to treat existing and new cases between now and 2015. Research suggests bevacizumab delays progression in newly diagnosed ovarian cancer

Early results from a large Phase-III trial suggest that adding bevacizumab to chemotherapy as a treatment for newly diagnosed ovarian cancer reduces the risk of disease progression during the first year of treatment. At the 35th Congress of the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) in Milan, Italy, Dr Tim Perren from Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, UK, reported findings from the international ICON7 trial, which included 1528 women with high-risk early or advanced stage epithelial ovarian cancer, primary peritoneal cancer or Fallopian tube cancer.
