Patients required by their health insurance providers to complete a six-month medical weight loss program before bariatric surgery do no better than patients who have no such requirement, according to a new study presented here at the 27th Annual Meeting of the American Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS).

Patients who were denied bariatric surgery for insurance reasons developed a slew of new obesity-related diseases and conditions within three years of follow-up, according to a new study presented here at the 27th Annual Meeting of the American Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS).

Ethicon Endo-Surgery renews research collaboration agreement with UC and Metabolic Diseases Institute

Ethicon Endo-Surgery, Inc. (EES) today announced it has renewed its research collaboration agreement with the University of Cincinnati (UC) and its Metabolic Diseases Institute (MDI). The three-year, $13.5M grant extension, is part of the EES Metabolic Applied Research Strategy (MARS), which also includes research from GI Metabolism Laboratory and Weight Center at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH).

Hospital matters in complication rates and lengths of stay for bariatric surgery

The number of bariatric surgeries in the U.S. skyrocketed from 13,386 in 1998 to 220,000 in 2008, but a new study released today by HealthGrades, the leading independent healthcare ratings organization, finds that the nation's hospitals have wide variances in both complication rates and lengths of stay, which largely correlate with the number of times the hospital performs bariatric procedures.

The Ethicon Endo-Surgery Intraluminal Stapler, designed with a new tissue compression scale, provides surgeons improved flexibility and control so that they can address the individual needs of each patient.

More than one third of Americans are considered obese and approximately 15 million (5%) Americans now have a body mass index greater than 40. The April issue of the Journal of the American Dietetic Association focuses on the ever-increasing use of bariatric surgery to control the excess morbidity and mortality associated with extreme obesity and the important role that registered dietitians play in the management of patients who have undergone the procedure.

Devicor offers to acquire EES Breast Care business

Ethicon Endo-Surgery, Inc. (EES), a Johnson & Johnson company, today announced it has received an irrevocable, unconditional offer from Devicor Medical Products (Devicor), a portfolio company of GTCR Golder Rauner, LLC, (GTCR), to acquire its Breast Care business. The EES Breast Care business sells products designed to help doctors diagnose breast cancer at early stages, while minimizing patient discomfort. Financial terms of the offer are not being disclosed.
