Neurologist Benjamin Brooks, who directs the MDA ALS Center at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, presented results of a trial of tamoxifen, a drug approved for the treatment of breast cancer, at a meeting of the American Academy of Neurology in April. The trial was supported in part by MDA.

Chlebowski and colleagues at Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, involved 2,437 women aged 48 to 79 who were diagnosed with early stage breast cancer and were treated at several medical centers. All the women had the standard treatments such as surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy and or tamoxifen therapy.

In many cases, this major procedure can be replaced by sentinel lymph node biopsy, which is a more simple and less invasive surgical procedure, but many still have to undergo axillary dissection after the sentinel lymph node biopsy.
