Pemetrexed-erlotinib shows second-line efficacy in advanced NSCLC

Combination therapy with pemetrexed and erlotinib significantly improves progression-free survival as compared with either drug alone in patients with advanced non-squamous non-small-cell lung cancer, a phase II study has found.

Once-daily COPD portfolio data from Novartis presented at European Respiratory Society (ERS) Annual Congress

Novartis announced new analyses of data for once-daily Ultibro® Breezhaler® (investigational QVA149 - indacaterol 85 mcg/glycopyrronium 43 mcg delivered dose, equivalent to 110 mcg/50 mcg metered dose per capsule), which showed significant improvements in lung function, shortness of breath and health-related quality of life for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients versus all comparators1,2. These data were part of 39 respiratory abstracts presented at the European Respiratory Society (ERS) Annual Congress in Barcelona, Spain.

The Our Lady of the Lake Trauma Center has earned official designation from the American College of Surgeons and the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals as a Level II Trauma Center. This verification makes the Lake's trauma center the only such center in the greater Baton Rouge region.

Amendments to oral cancer bill would increase co-pay for oral cancer treatment, says NPAF

Citing the hardships certain to be faced by a population of California cancer patients on strained incomes, the National Patient Advocate Foundation (NPAF), a national non-profit organization providing the patient voice for legislative reform at the state and federal levels, pulled its support for AB 219 following amendments passed in the California state senate yesterday that would prohibitively increase the co-pay for oral cancer treatment.

NIH awards nearly $14M grants to research on how genetic factors influence susceptibility to disease

Five research teams have received new four-year awards to study the genomics of disease susceptibility in ethnically diverse populations. The projects aim to unravel the subtle variations in genetic makeup among groups - including African-Americans, Asian-Americans, Hispanics and more - that may account for differences in risks for conditions such as high blood pressure and high blood lipids, in addition to common diseases such as cancer and heart disease.
