Greenwich Hospital's new radiation oncology therapy gives renewed hope to HRPC patients

At the end of July, Greenwich became the only hospital in New York City, Westchester and Fairfield counties to offer Xofigo, commonly referred to as Radium 223, a new radiation oncology therapy that is giving renewed hope to patients with stage 4 hormone-refractory prostate cancer.

Apoptosis can reactivate latent herpesviruses in dying cell

Researchers have found that apoptosis, a natural process of programmed cell death, can reactivate latent herpesviruses in the dying cell. The results of their research, which could have broad clinical significance since many cancer chemotherapies cause apoptosis, was published ahead of print in the Journal of Virology.

Researchers at the Hood Center for Children and Families at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth have received a two-year, $275,000 grant from the National Institutes of Health to develop and test a program that uses children's educational TV characters to promote healthy eating and physical activity among preschoolers.

Liver cancer is the sixth most common cancer worldwide and the third most deadly. It mainly affects men over the age of 40, most often with cirrhosis or hepatitis B or C. But in Peru, it also uncharacteristically affects young people, even children, who do not have the identified related risk factors.

Pivotal Study Supports Use of IMNOVID®▼ Pomalidomide in Patients with Relapsed or Refractory Multiple Myeloma

The Lancet Oncology published this week findings from a study, which showed that the new oral therapy IMNOVID®▼ (pomalidomide), used in combination with low-dose dexamethasone demonstrated a significant survival advantage over high-dose dexamethasone alone, in patients with relapsed and refractory multiple myeloma (rrMM).1

Head and neck cancer patients receiving radiation benefit from swallowing exercises

A study at UCLA's Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center has found that head and neck cancer patients receiving radiation as part of their treatment were less likely to need a feeding tube or suffer unwanted side effects such as worsening of diet or narrowing of the throat passage if they performed a set of prescribed swallowing exercises - called a "swallow preservation protocol" - during therapy.
