The National Cancer Institute has awarded a five-year, $11.3 million grant to a team of researchers at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center - Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute to further their studies on thyroid cancer.

At least 58 U.S. abortion clinics -- almost 1 in 10 -- have shut or stopped providing the procedure since 2011 as access vanishes faster than ever amid a Republican-led push to legislate the industry out of existence. A wave of regulations that makes it too expensive or logistically impossible for facilities to remain in business drove at least a third of the closings (Deprez, 9/3).

Use of MRI before or after surgery in women with breast cancer has no benefits

A Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center study shows that the use of MRI before or immediately after surgery in women with DCIS was not associated with reduced local recurrence or contralateral breast cancer rates. The findings are being presented on Saturday, September 7, 2013, at the 2013 Breast Cancer Symposium.

Study shows benefit of chemotherapy on survival of elderly patients with SCLC

Although numerous randomized clinical trials have demonstrated a benefit of chemotherapy for patients with small-cell lung cancer (SCLC), these trials have predominantly compared different chemotherapy regimens rather than comparing chemotherapy to best supportive care. Some of them included chest radiation or prophylactic cranial irradiation. Moreover, many trials excluded elderly patients.

Ontario researchers develop evidence-based recommendations for lung cancer screening

Lung cancer is the most common cause of cancer death in Ontario. Screening for lung cancer using low-dose computed tomography has been the subject of many research studies since the 1990s. The National Lung Screening Trial compared LDCT with chest radiograph in high-risk populations and found a 20 percent reduction in lung cancer mortality at 6 years with LDCT after an initial scan and two annual rounds of screening.

Researchers at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai have received a multi-year National Institutes of Health grant to determine factors which may influence why African Americans are less likely than others to receive colorectal cancer screenings, despite having the highest CRC incidence and mortality of any ethnic/racial group in America.

Researchers find no difference in stage-adjusted lung cancer mortality between blacks and whites

According to the American Cancer Society, an estimated 160,340 lung cancer deaths occurred in the United States in 2012, accounting for 28 percent of all cancer deaths. While survival from lung cancer has improved since the early 1990s, racial differences in lung cancer survival persist such that blacks experience poorer 5-year survival for lung cancer compared to whites.

Study identifies new tool to accurately analyze mtDNA deletions associated with diseases, aging

A study published today in Aging Cell identifies a new tool to accurately analyze extremely rare mitochondrial DNA deletions associated with a range of diseases and disorders as well as aging. This approach, which relies on Droplet Digital PCR (ddPCR-) technology, will help researchers explore mtDNA deletions as potential disease biomarkers.
