VeriStrat analysis shows patients with advanced NSCLC benefit from dual targeted therapies

Results from the VeriStrat analysis of a phase II trial of first line erlotinib in combination with sorafenib in patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer were presented today at the 22nd EORTC-NCI-AACR Symposium on Molecular Targets in Cancer Therapeutics being held in Berlin, Germany by Egbert Smit, MD, PhD of the VU Medical Center, Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Researchers develop medical model for regenerating bladders using stem cells

Researchers in the United States have developed a medical model for regenerating bladders using stem cells harvested from a patient's own bone marrow. The research, published in STEM CELLS, is especially relevant for paediatric patients suffering from abnormally developed bladders, but also represents another step towards new organ replacement therapies.

Merck wins third FOSAMAX bellwether trial

Merck & Co., Inc. today said a federal court jury in New York found in its favor in the Graves v. Merck case, rejecting the claims of a Florida woman who blamed her dental and jaw related problems on her FOSAMAX use. With today's verdict, Merck has won three of the first four bellwether cases in the FOSAMAX litigation.

FDA-approved anti-parasite drug blocks Wnt signaling pathway in colon cancer

Eating five portions of fruit and vegetables per day is one of the means that experts most frequently recommend for preventing cancer. Now, the European EPIC study carried out by researchers from 10 countries has shown that, in the case of lung cancer, the important thing is not just the quantity but also the variety of fruit consumed, which can reduce the risk by up to 23%.

Xgeva receives FDA approval for prevention of SREs in patients with bone metastases

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Xgeva (denosumab) on Thursday to help prevent skeletal-related events (SREs) in patients with cancer that has spread (metastasized) and damaged the bone. Skeletal-related events include bone fractures from cancer and bone pain requiring radiation.

However, finding the right imaging method and optimizing it for data collection can be a daunting process, even for an established imaging laboratory. To fill this need, a new series of laboratory manuals has been developed by Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Press. The first volume in this series, Imaging: A Laboratory Manual, has just been released.
