Stemline licenses clinically active oncology vaccine for dual targeting of tumor bulk and cancer stem cells

Stemline Therapeutics, Inc., a clinical stage biopharmaceutical company developing novel oncology compounds that target cancer stem cells (CSCs), today announced that it holds the license, from the University of Pittsburgh ("Pitt"), for the exclusive worldwide rights to a clinically active oncology vaccine directed to multiple defined targets on tumor bulk and CSCs.

Genentech granted FDA hearing on Avastin for metastatic breast cancer

Genentech, a member of the Roche Group, today announced the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted a hearing to allow the company the opportunity to present its views on why Avastin® (bevacizumab) should remain FDA-approved for metastatic breast cancer (mBC). The FDA has scheduled the hearing for June 28 to 29, 2011.

BioCryst Pharmaceuticals, Inc. announced that it has been awarded a $55.0 million contract modification by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services intended to fund to completion the Phase 3 development of its neuraminidase inhibitor, intravenous peramivir, for the treatment of patients hospitalized with influenza.

Feasibility study to test scalp cooling device in breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy

A feasibility study to test the use of a scalp cooling device that breast cancer patients will wear while undergoing chemotherapy treatment will be conducted at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. This will be part of the first significant study of the medical device in the United States.

Lack of health insurance limits Hepatitis C patients' access to latest antiviral therapy

New research has determined that patients in the U.S. with hepatitis C virus (HCV) are twice as likely to not have health insurance coverage compared with those without the disease. In fact researchers found only a third of HCV infected Americans have access to antiviral therapy; the remaining are either uninsured or not candidates for therapy due to treatment contraindications. Details of this study are published in the March issue of Hepatology, a peer-reviewed journal of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD).
