EMEA grants Genta's request for SME designation

Genta Incorporated announced that it has received $2.8 million in non-dilutive cash proceeds from the sale of net operating tax losses and research tax credits generated in prior tax years as part of the Technology Business Tax Certificate Program sponsored by the New Jersey Economic Development Authority (NJEDA), pursuant to the rules, regulations and stipulations set forth by the program.

Raptor Pharmaceutical to present DR Cysteamine trial data at Lysosomal Disease Network Symposium

Raptor Pharmaceutical Corp., today announced the presentation of cystinosis data at the Annual Lysosomal Disease Network WORLD Symposium 2010, being held February 10-12 in Miami, Florida. Biomarker data from a Phase IIb pilot study of Raptor's proprietary delayed-release cysteamine bitartrate ("DR Cysteamine") will be the subject of a poster titled, "Correlation of Plasma Cysteamine and WBC Cystine Levels at Steady State in Patients Treated with Cysteamine Bitartrate." The results will also be published in an upcoming issue of the journal Molecular Genetics and Metabolism.

Medicinal chemistry paper related to the discovery of CUDC-101 published

Curis, Inc., a drug development company seeking to develop next generation targeted small molecule drug candidates for cancer treatment, today announced that a medicinal chemistry paper related to the discovery of CUDC-101, Curis’s HDAC, EGFR and Her2 inhibitor, was published online in the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry and also will be published in an upcoming print version of the journal.

DMC recommends Celsion to continue its Phase III ThermoDox clinical trial for primary liver cancer

Celsion Corporation announced today that after reviewing safety data from 120 patients enrolled in the pivotal Phase III ThermoDox® clinical trial ("HEAT" trial) for primary liver cancer, the Data Monitoring Committee (DMC) has recommended that Celsion continue to enroll patients in the trial.

Genzyme and Isis Pharmaceuticals: Phase 3 mipomersen study in heFH patients meets primary endpoint

Genzyme Corp. and Isis Pharmaceuticals Inc. today announced that the phase 3 study of mipomersen in patients with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (heFH) met its primary endpoint with a highly statistically significant 28 percent reduction in LDL-cholesterol after 26 weeks of treatment, compared with an increase of 5 percent for placebo.

YM BioSciences receives additional AeroLEF patents in U.S.

YM BioSciences Inc., announced that it has been granted two additional patents in the US for AeroLEF(R), the Company's proprietary, inhaled-delivery composition of free and liposome-encapsulated fentanyl in development for the treatment of moderate to severe acute pain. US patent numbers 7,648,981 and 7,648,982 extend the life of YM's AeroLEF patent estate in the US to 2024.

sanofi-aventis reports 2009 fourth-quarter and full-year net earnings

Commenting on the Group's 2009 performance, sanofi-aventis Chief Executive Officer Christopher A. Viehbacher said, "2009 was the first year of implementation of our new strategy. Goodwin Biotechnology Inc., a full service Contract Biomanufacturing Company and Macrocyclics, Inc., a manufacturer of customized chelating agents, jointly announced today their collaborative agreement on Chelation and Bioconjugation. DMC recommends JV to continue enrolling patients in Phase III clinical trial of StemEx

The Gamida Cell-Teva Joint Venture (JV) announced today that the Data Monitoring Committee (DMC) has independently reviewed preliminary data from the pivotal registration, Phase III clinical trial of StemEx (called ExCell) and has recommended that the JV continue to enroll patients in this study.

Researchers find differences in the biology of lung cancer between men and women

An analysis of genetic and clinical data for nearly 800 patients with non-small cell lung cancer has identified differences in genetic characteristics that are associated with age and sex specific patterns of increased or decreased recurrence-free survival, according to a study in the February 10 issue of JAMA.

The Ontario Nurses' Association (ONA) is warning that London-area cancer patients will face longer wait times as London Health Sciences Centre cuts five of its 22 full-time and four of its part-time front-line primary care nurses providing outpatient cancer program care.

Mapping of all fragile sites of yeast S.cerevisiae may lead to better understanding of cancer development

The research group of Dr. Fran-ois Robert, a researcher at the Institut de recherches cliniques de Montr-al (IRCM), in collaboration with the team of Dr. Daniel Durocher (Samuel Lunenfeld Research Institute and University of Toronto) accomplished a technical breakthrough: they mapped all the fragile sites of a living organism, the budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The method used by the researchers can be applied to humans. This study has been published online today in the scientific journal Nature Structural and Molecular Biology.

Insight into mechanism H. pylori uses to evade the immune system

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is the causal agent of chronic gastritis, ulcer and gastric cancer. It has the potential to persist in the human stomach for decades, sometimes causing neither harm nor clinical symptoms. Nevertheless, on some occasions, depending on the host immune system and the strain causing the infection, the outcome can be very serious. To maintain the infection, the bacterium must adapt to survive the host defences. One way to accomplish this is to sequentially change the external proteins on the bacterial surface.
