Patient advocates and researchers present MythBusters show to increase awareness of cancer research

Using a combination of "Jeopardy," "Saturday Night Live" and a famous Discovery Channel show called MythBusters, patient advocates and researchers at Vanderbilt Ingram Cancer Center presented "Mythbusters: Cancer Research in Jeopardy" to their community in an effort to increase awareness of cancer research, particularly clinical trials.

Touch, massage can reduce stress/anxiety, pain, fatigue, depression and nausea in cancer patients

Sponsored by the National Cancer Institute, a recent research study has revealed that touch and massage, routinely administered by care partners significantly reduces the effects of cancer and the side-effects from its treatment while providing comfort and improvement in the quality of life. During the study, family caregivers learned touch and massage techniques from an instructional DVD.

Surviving cancer is physically and emotionally exhausting. But for many patients, beating the disease itself is just the first hurdle. A second ordeal comes from living with the fungating tumor wounds that accompany various cancers. Aside from the pain they inflict, these wounds often emit a strong and offensive odor. Not only does going into public become potentially embarrassing, but it also can be extremely depressing when even close family members are repulsed by the smell.

Fitch Ratings sees an active year for new drug applications to be registered to U.S. and European drug regulators considering recent updates to the pharmaceutical industry's late-stage R&D programs. According to Fitch's new Global Pharmaceutical R&D Pipeline report, the Fitch-rated pharmaceutical developers listed in the report plan on submitting marketing applications to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) or the European Medicines Agency (EMEA) during 2010 for approval of 22 novel drug therapies.

G1 HCV patients having fast antiviral response to TVR with PEG-IFN and RBV can be cured in 24 weeks

24 weeks of treatment could be sufficient to cure between 93 and 100% of treatment-na-ve chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotype 1 (G1) infected patients if they have a fast antiviral response to Telaprevir (TVR) with Peginterferon (PEG-IFN) and Ribavirin (RBV), according to new research presented today at the International Liver Congress 2010, the Annual Meeting of the European Association for the Study of the Liver in Vienna, Austria.

Newly announced budget projections show the need to raise Kansas' cigarette tax by $1, according to a coalition of public health groups. Studies show increasing the cigarette tax by $1 would bring in $74.7 million in needed revenue, while raising the tax at a similar rate on smokeless tobacco and other tobacco products would raise an additional $23 million.
