More than one-quarter of Americans are concerned about the value and safety of vaccines and 21.4 percent believe vaccines can cause autism, according to the Thomson Reuters-NPR Health Poll.

UC San Diego professor receives NIDDK grant to study kidney complications related to diabetes

Kumar Sharma, MD, FAHA, professor of medicine at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine and director of the Center for Renal Translational Medicine, has received a $5.9 million grant from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, part of the National Institutes of Health, to study kidney complications related to type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

Researchers examine link between innate exercise capacity and survivability

Aerobic exercise capacity has proven to be a good indicator of health. A recent paper in Circulation Research whose authors include researchers from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology's KG Jebsen Center of Exercise in Medicine uses a rat model to show that innate exercise capacity can be linked to longevity.

JenaValve's transapical TAVI system receives CE mark approval to treat aortic valve stenosis

JenaValve Technology GmbH, a German medical device company specializing in the development of transcatheter heart valve implantation systems, announced today that the Company has received CE mark approval for its transapical TAVI system of the second-generation. This system is used to treat severe aortic valve stenosis in elderly high-risk patients, especially in patients for whom conventional open-heart surgery is not an option.

Takeda acquires Nycomed

Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Limited ("Takeda", TSE: 4502) announced it has completed its acquisition of Nycomed A/S for 9.6 billion Euro on a cash-free, debt-free basis and made Nycomed a wholly owned subsidiary of Takeda effective the same day. Dr. Frank Morich has been named CEO of Nycomed in addition to his current role as Executive Vice President (EVP), International Operations, Takeda Pharmaceuticals International, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Takeda America Holdings, Inc.

I'd like to think it's a good thing - I've arrived at my professional peak. But mainly it seems as if I've just stopped getting better. During the first two or three years in practice, your skills seem to improve almost daily. It's not about hand-eye coördination - you have that down halfway through your residency.

Most drug therapy interventions for people with autism have targeted psychiatric problems, including aggression, anxiety and obsessive behavior. Now, University of Missouri researchers are examining the use of propranolol to improve the primary traits associated with autism - difficulty with normal social skills, language and repetitive behaviors.
