New preclinical data of XOMA 052 in animal model of Type 2 diabetes to be presented at ADA 2010

XOMA Ltd., a leader in the discovery and development of therapeutic antibodies, will be presenting new preclinical data in an animal model of Type 2 diabetes in which its anti-inflammatory therapeutic antibody candidate, XOMA 052, was used as monotherapy and in combination with the marketed anti-diabetic drugs exendin-4 (Byetta) or sitagliptin (Januvia).

Consuming omega-3 fatty acids may not lower heart disease risk for women with type 1 diabetes: Study

Consuming higher amounts of omega-3 fatty acids does not appear to lower heart disease risk for women with type 1 diabetes, according to a University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health study being presented at the 70th Scientific Sessions of the American Diabetes Association.

Phase 2b clinical trial data of SGLT2 inhibitor in patients with type 2 diabetes presented at ADA 2010

Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical Research & Development, L.L.C. announced today that canagliflozin, an investigational, oral, selective sodium-glucose transporter-2 inhibitor, improved glycemic control, and was also associated with a decrease in body weight, in a Phase 2b dose-ranging trial in patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes who were concurrently treated with metformin. The data were presented at the 70th American Diabetes Association Scientific Sessions.

Medco Health Solutions and BIG direkt gesund today announced that they have executed an agreement for an innovative portfolio of advanced pharmacy-driven solutions, which upon expressed patient consent, is designed to leverage innovative technologies for improving patient outcomes, adherence, and lowering overall healthcare costs. CHMP adopts positive opinion on pending MAA for SYCREST sublingual tablets

Merck announced that the Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use adopted a positive opinion on the pending Marketing Authorization Application for SYCREST (asenapine) sublingual tablets. The CHMP has recommended that the European Commission grant a marketing authorization for SYCREST for the treatment of moderate to severe manic episodes associated with bipolar I disorder in adults. The CHMP did not support an indication for the treatment of schizophrenia.

Merck's DULERA Inhalation Aerosol for asthma receives FDA approval

Merck today announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved DULERA® (mometasone furoate and formoterol fumarate dihydrate) Inhalation Aerosol, a new fixed-dose combination asthma treatment for patients 12 years of age and older. DULERA is not indicated for the relief of acute bronchospasm. DULERA combines an inhaled corticosteroid (mometasone furoate) with a long-acting beta2-agonist (formoterol fumarate).

NIH to invest $25M over five years for international collaboration on genetic research in Africa

The NIH on Tuesday announced a partnership with Wellcome Trust and the African Society for Human Genetics that will enable African researchers to "use the latest genetic and clinical technology to study common health problems, such as cardiovascular disease, cancer and other diseases," VOA News reports (DeCapua, 6/22).

Hidden heart condition raise stroke and heart failure risk: Report

According to the National Stroke Foundation a hidden and largely undetected heart condition is costing the Australian economy over $1.2 billion a year. In a report released today the Foundation has said that Atrial Fibrillation (AF), commonly manifested as severe irregularity of heart beat and palpitation that may go unnoticed is affecting more than 240,000 Australians at present with half over the age of 75.

Folic acid and vitamin B12 lower homocysteine levels in patients who experience heart attack: JAMA

Patients who had experienced a heart attack and lowered their blood homocysteine levels with folic acid and vitamin B12 supplementation did not have an associated lower risk of heart attack, coronary death or stroke, according to a study in the June 23/30 issue of JAMA. However, the researchers did find that folic acid supplementation did not increase the risk of cancer, which has been speculated.

Scientists at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center have discovered that a diet with high levels of fructose - levels equivalent to that in high fructose corn syrup - and of trans fats not only increases obesity, but also leads to significant fatty liver disease with scar tissue.

Mice treated with XOMA 052 experiences improvement in measures associated with diabetes: Endocrinology

XOMA Ltd., a leader in the discovery and development of therapeutic antibodies, announced the publication of data from a mouse model of diet-induced obesity in the June, 2010 edition of the journal Endocrinology. The data showed that mice treated with XOMA 052 both prophylactically and therapeutically experienced improvement in measures associated with diabetes and cardiovascular disease including reduction in glycosylated hemoglobin levels, improvement in glucose control, improved beta-cell survival and function, and a reduction in total cholesterol without reduction in high density lipoprotein.
