Innovative approach to build a new drug to treat a number of CNS diseases

Working like an architect, Prof. Hagit Eldar-Finkelman of Tel Aviv University's Sackler School of Medicine is "building" a new drug, L803-MTS, to treat a number of central nervous system (CNS) diseases like Alzheimer's. In pre-clinical studies, it also shows promise against Parkinson's, Huntington's and diabetes.

Existing research shows that rates of binge eating among adult women is virtually identical across race. However, among college age women, it's a different story: Caucasian women are more apt to exhibit binge eating behaviors than African American women, according to a study presented at this month's annual scientific meeting of the Obesity Society.

Omega-3 fatty acid supplements do not improve levels of depression in heart disease patients

Contrary to the findings of some studies, new research indicates that augmenting antidepressant therapy with an omega-3 fatty acid supplement does not result in improvement in levels of depression in patients with coronary heart disease, according to a study in the October 21 issue of JAMA.

U.S. District Court rules in favor of Allergan in its patent infringement suit against Exela PharmSci

Allergan, Inc. announced today that the United States District Court for the District of Delaware ruled in favor of Allergan, Inc. in its patent infringement suit against Exela PharmSci, Inc., Exela PharmSci Pvt., Ltd. ("Exela"), Apotex, Inc. and Apotex Corp. ("Apotex") (collectively, the "Defendants") for seeking to market purported generic versions of Allergan’s drugs ALPHAGAN® P (brimonidine tartrate ophthalmic solution) 0.1% and 0.15%. Specifically, after a trial in March of 2009, the Court ruled today that all five patents (U.S. Patent Nos. 6,627,210; 6,641,834; 6,673,337; 6,562,873; and 5,424,078) asserted by Allergan are valid and enforceable, that Apotex's proposed generic versions of ALPHAGAN® P 0.1% and 0.15% infringe each of the five patents, and that Exela's proposed generic version of ALPHAGAN® P 0.15% infringes U.S. Patent No. 6,641,834, which was the only patent asserted against it. Pursuant to the Hatch-Waxman Act, the United States Food and Drug Administration is required to delay approval of Defendants’ proposed generic products until the last to expire of the infringed patents, which is 2022.

Shire announces new pharmacokinetic data of ADHD medication

Shire plc, the global specialty biopharmaceutical company, announced new data about the pharmacokinetics of its Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) medication, Vyvanse- (lisdexamfetamine dimesylate) Capsules CII, which showed that Vyvanse provided similar concentrations of its active medication in the blood when administered either intranasally or when administered orally.

This according to a new thesis from the Swedish medical university Karolinska Institutet.
