Ghent University signs agreement to use Roche's LightCycler 1536 Instrument for cancer research

Roche and Ghent University (Belgium) have signed an agreement for the use of Roche's LightCycler® 1536 Instrument in various cancer research projects in Ghent. Studies include multigene expression signature profiling on cancer research samples and, digital PCR for sensitive detection of mutant cancer cells in a background of normal cells.

ZenBio awarded Phase I SBIR grant to establish novel human cell-based models of NAFLD

ZenBio, Inc. announced that it has been awarded a Phase I SBIR grant to establish novel human cell-based models of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) that will be useful for basic research and as a potential drug development platform. The project stems from recent efforts at ZenBio, Inc. to develop methods for differentiating adipose tissue derived progenitor cells into hepatocyte-like cells.

Patients dismissed from hospital with noncardiac chest pain continue to experience cardiac events: Study

The growing number of Americans with cardiovascular disease has caused a heightened sensitivity in the evaluation of chest pain. In a study published in the April issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings researchers reported that patients dismissed from the hospital with noncardiac chest pain continue to experience cardiac events, which may highlight a need for more aggressive cardiovascular risk factor management in this population.

Obesity related FTO gene linked to Alzheimer’s disease.

If you are an American of European origin and carry the FTO gene which causes obesity, you have a much higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. A recent study conducted at the University of California, Los Angeles claimed that 'A commonly carried allele of the obesity-related FTO gene is associated with reduced brain volume in healthy elderly'.

Positive top-line results from Phenomix' Phase 3 trial of dutogliptin for Type 2 diabetes mellitus

Phenomix Corporation today announced positive top-line results from a six-month Phase 3 study comparing dutogliptin 400mg and 200mg once daily as monotherapy versus placebo for the treatment of patients with Type 2 diabetes mellitus. Dutogliptin is Phenomix' internally-discovered dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor.
