Human umbilical cord blood-derived EPCs accelerate wound healing in diabetics

Transplanting human umbilical cord blood-derived endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) has been found to "significantly accelerate" wound closure in diabetic mouse models, said a team of Korean researchers publishing in the current issue of Cell Transplantation.

Higher intake of vitamin D may reduce breast cancer risk

Researchers at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine and Creighton University School of Medicine in Omaha have reported that markedly higher intake of vitamin D is needed to reach blood levels that can prevent or markedly cut the incidence of breast cancer and several other major diseases than had been originally thought. The findings are published February 21 in the journal Anticancer Research.

Regeneron submits VEGF Trap-Eye BLA to FDA for treatment of wet AMD

Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, Inc. announced that the company submitted a Biologics License Application (BLA) to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for VEGF Trap-Eye for the treatment of the neovascular form of age-related macular degeneration (wet AMD). Under the Prescription Drug User Fee Act (PDUFA), the goal for a standard review time from submission to FDA action is ten months.

Pharming, Santarus begin RHUCIN Phase IIIb study in patients with Hereditary Angioedema

Specialty biopharmaceutical company Santarus, Inc. and biotech company Pharming Group NV (NYSE Euronext: PHARM) today announced that Pharming has begun an international, multicenter, randomized, placebo-controlled Phase IIIb clinical study evaluating the investigational drug RHUCIN for the treatment of acute attacks of angioedema in patients with Hereditary Angioedema.

Researchers at Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University have developed an experimental vaccine that appears to protect against an increasingly common and particularly deadly form of pneumococcal pneumonia. Details of the new vaccine, which was tested in an animal model, are reported in a paper published today in the Journal of Infectious Diseases.

Red and processed meats – How much to include in diet?

A latest Government-commissioned report advises people to eat less red meat and processed meat saying that it lowers the risk of developing cancer. The report will advise consumers eat no more than 2.5 oz (70g) of red or processed meat a day – the equivalent of three rashers of bacon. Also the weekly recommended limit is likely to be 1.1 lb (500g), the same as eating a large pack of minced beef, two 8oz steaks or four 4oz pork chops. The farming and retail industries are, as predictable, not happy with the directives.
