Strativa Pharmaceuticals today announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved Oravig (miconazole) buccal tablets for the treatment of oropharyngeal candidiasis, more commonly known as thrush, in adults and children age 16 and older.

Genentech's Tarceva receives FDA approval as maintenance therapy for advanced NSCLC

Genentech, Inc., a wholly owned member of the Roche Group, announced today that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the daily pill Tarceva® (erlotinib) as a maintenance treatment for patients with locally advanced or metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) whose disease has not progressed after four cycles of platinum-based first-line chemotherapy.

Results of study comparing REMICADE to azathioprine for Crohn's disease published

Findings published today in The New England Journal of Medicine from a first-of-its-kind comparator trial evaluating the anti-tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha biologic treatment REMICADE (infliximab) in the treatment of moderately to severely active Crohn's disease in patients who were naive to immunomodulator and biologic therapy, showed that a significantly greater proportion of patients receiving REMICADE achieved steroid-free remission and mucosal healing compared with patients receiving azathioprine.

InterMune reports Phase 1b MAD study results of RTV-boosted danoprevir in HCV patients at 45th EASL

InterMune, Inc. today announced results of all three cohorts from a 15-day Phase 1b multiple-ascending-dose (MAD) study of low doses of danoprevir (also known as RG7227 and ITMN-191) boosted by low-dose ritonavir (RTV) in patients chronically infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotype-1.

Data from Phase 2 clinical trials of Hematide/peginesatide presented at NKF Annual Meeting

Affymax, Inc. and Takeda Global Research & Development Center, Inc., U.S., today announced data from several post hoc analyses of Phase 2 clinical trials that evaluated Hematide/peginesatide in dialysis patients with anemia in chronic kidney disease. The data provide hypotheses for further investigation of this agent in anemia management in this patient population.

Results from Romark Laboratories' STEALTH C-3 clinical trial presented at EASL Annual Meeting

Romark Laboratories announced results from its STEALTH C-3 clinical trial, a phase 2 clinical study of nitazoxanide in treatment-naive patients with genotype 1 chronic hepatitis C. Study results were presented as a late breaking communication at the International Liver Congress™ 2010, the 45th Annual Meeting of the European Association for the Study of the Liver in Vienna, Austria.

Escherichia coli cases drop in 2009

As per a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) a 12 % drop in rates of Escherichia coli (E.coli) infection has been noted in 2009 as compared to statistics for 2008. This is being seen by federal health officials as a sign that the new food safety measures are effective. Most of the pathogens under study are from the bacteria family like E.coli 0157, salmonella, campylobacter, listeria and vibrio. It was found that food poisoning rates for the most common pathogens have changed little from statistics collected in 2004.

Vertex Pharmaceuticals announces results from Phase 1b clinical trial of VX-222

In conjunction with an oral presentation at the 45th Annual Meeting of the European Association for the Study of the Liver in Vienna, Vertex Pharmaceuticals Incorporated today announced results from a Phase 1b clinical trial of the investigational oral hepatitis C virus polymerase inhibitor, VX-222. In the trial, treatment with VX-222 for three days was well-tolerated, with all adverse events being mild to moderate in severity.

Infliximab-azathioprine combination helps more Crohn's disease patients achieve remission

A study led by Mayo Clinic suggests remission from Crohn's disease may be more likely if patients get biologic therapy combined with immune-suppressing drugs first instead of immune-suppressing drugs alone. The study, published in the April 15, 2010 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine, found treatment of moderate to severe Crohn's disease with infliximab plus azathioprine allows more patients to achieve remission and mucosal healing than therapy with azathioprine alone.

FDA approves J&JPRD's PANCREAZE NDA

Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical Research and Development (J&JPRD) announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved a new drug application (NDA) for PANCREAZE™ (pancrelipase) delayed-release capsules for the treatment of exocrine pancreatic insufficiency due to cystic fibrosis or other conditions. Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency is the inability to properly digest and absorb food due to a lack of enzymes made by the pancreas that are important in the digestion of fats, proteins, and sugars.

Cubist Pharmaceuticals initiates dosing in Phase 2 trial with CB-183,315 for diarrhea due to CDAD

Cubist Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a leading acute care therapeutics company, today announced the enrollment and dosing of the first subject in its Phase 2 trial with CB-183,315, an antibacterial drug candidate intended to treat patients with a severe and sometimes life-threatening diarrhea caused by Clostridium difficile known as C. difficile-associated diarrhea, or CDAD. The trial is expected to enroll more than 200 subjects at 28 sites in the United States and Canada.
