Galectin closes underwritten public offering of 1,333,361 units

Galectin Therapeutics Inc. today announced it has closed its underwritten public offering of 1,333,361 units (including 173,916 units that were offered and sold by Galectin pursuant to the exercise in-full of the underwriter's over-allotment option) at a price to the public of $9.00 per unit, with each unit consisting of two common voting shares, par value $0.001 per share and one warrant to purchase one share of Common Stock.

EpiCept to receive $0.97M in public offering

EpiCept Corporation announced today that it has entered into a definitive agreement with a single life science focused institutional investor for the purchase of 1,065 shares of its new Series B 0% Convertible Preferred Stock at $1,000 per share, which are convertible into an aggregate of approximately 6.3 million shares of its common stock, and five-year warrants to purchase up to approximately 3.1 million shares of its common stock at an exercise price of $0.17 per share that are immediately exercisable.

A report from the nation's leading cancer organizations shows rates of death in the United States from all cancers for men and women continued to decline between 2004 and 2008. The findings come from the latest Annual Report to the Nation on the Status of Cancer.

Supreme Court debates health care reforms and mandate on insurance

The five conservative justices relentlessly questioned Solicitor General Donald B. Verrilli Jr., who defended the law. Justice Antonin Scalia asked whether upholding the mandate would mean that Congress could require everyone to exercise. Justice Samuel Alito asked whether the mandate wasn't really a disguised subsidy of sick people by healthy people. Chief Justice John Roberts asked whether a mandate to purchase health insurance you may need some day was any different from a requirement to buy a cell phone for use in a possible emergency. Alito asked whether the government could force Americans to buy burial coverage, since it is something everyone will eventually need.

UAB cardiac rehab program reduces mortality among people with heart attack

After two heart attacks and 10 stents, Rick Vinson had a decision to make — do nothing and likely die from heart disease like his father or take a chance at having a long life. Vinson chose the latter. After receiving his last stent in October 2010, he entered a cardiac rehab program at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Since then he has dropped 20 pounds, his cholesterol has dropped to 141 from 315 and his triglycerides are down to 149 from 465.
