Walt Disney launches national initiative to raise healthy, happy kids

The Walt Disney Company today launched Disney Magic of Healthy Living - a national multimedia initiative designed to partner with parents in their quest to raise healthy, happy kids. The initiative, which includes public service announcements featuring First Lady Michelle Obama and young Disney stars, builds on the Company's commitment to a healthier generation of kids begun in 2006 with the announcement of landmark nutritional guidelines associating Disney brands and characters with a more nutritionally balanced range of foods.

Shire announces tender offer results

Shire plc, the global specialty biopharmaceutical company, announces that shareholders of Movetis NV have tendered 99.18% of the shares of Movetis during the initial acceptance period of the tender offer which closed on September 27, 2010. The shares tendered into the tender offer are expected to be settled on October 12, 2010.

Best P.A.D. Research Awards honor investigators for research on peripheral arterial disease

The Peripheral Arterial Disease (P.A.D.) Coalition presented the Coalition's second annual Best P.A.D. Research Awards to the top three research papers on P.A.D. published in 2009 at the organization's Seventh Annual Meeting in Alexandria, VA last week. The Best P.A.D. Research Awards honor the work of investigators and acknowledge the creation of new clinical research relevant to the understanding and/or treatment of peripheral arterial disease.

Study reveals consistent correlation between adult diabetes and particulate air pollution

A national epidemiologic study finds a strong, consistent correlation between adult diabetes and particulate air pollution that persists after adjustment for other risk factors like obesity and ethnicity, report researchers from Children's Hospital Boston. The relationship was seen even at exposure levels below the current EPA safety limit.

Santarus, Cosmo announce positive results from budesonide MMX Phase III study in ulcerative colitis

Santarus, Inc. and Cosmo Pharmaceuticals S.p.A. today announced positive top-line results from the Phase III clinical study conducted in the U.S. and India to evaluate the safety and efficacy of budesonide MMX® for the induction of remission of mild or moderate active ulcerative colitis. The study results show that budesonide MMX 9 mg taken once daily met the primary endpoint of superiority to placebo.

Canadians living with depression significantly underestimate others' perceptions about illness

A new national survey reveals a vast gap between how Canadians living with depression view their condition, compared to how it is viewed in reality by the general population, possibly preventing them from seeking the best treatment and care. Most Canadians with depression feel their illness is not perceived by the public as a medical condition or a serious illness (81 per cent) when in fact less than five per cent of the general population actually has that view. In fact, the majority of Canadians (72 per cent) recognize depression as both serious and treatable.

Misperceptions about flavored and sports beverages

Children who practice healthy lifestyle habits such as eating fruits and vegetables and engaging in physical activity may be negatively impacting their health because they tend to consume large amounts of flavored and sports beverages containing sugar, according to research at The Michael & Susan Dell Center for Healthy Living at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth).

European Society of Cardiology to support EuroPRevent Meeting

Workplace wellness programmes play a vital role in preventing cardiovascular disease and stroke. This year's World Heart Day theme is to encourage employers and employees to take simple steps to improve heart-health in the workplace. Active commuting helps to stay fit

Men and women who walk or ride a bike to work appear more fit, and men are less likely to be overweight or obese and have healthier triglyceride levels, blood pressure and insulin levels, according to a report in the July 13 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine, one of the JAMA/Archives journals.

Astellas Pharma announces Phase IV study results of Lexiscan injection at ASNC session

Today Astellas Pharma US, Inc. announced results of a Phase IV study showing Lexiscan(regadenoson) Injection was comparable to placebo in causing a >15% decrease in forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) in subjects with asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) who are likely candidates for myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI) studies.

Vertex exercises option to purchase additional $25 million notes

Vertex Pharmaceuticals Incorporated today announced that the underwriter for its offering of 3.35% convertible senior subordinated notes due 2015 has exercised in full its option to purchase an additional $25 million aggregate principal amount of notes. The exercise of the option brings the total aggregate principal amount of notes sold in the offering to $400 million

Victorian health report card

Results from the 2008 Victorian Population Health Survey of more than 34,000 people are out. Broadly the picture is not too pleasing with signs of poor health like weight gain and disease. People are eating less fruit and vegetables, but smoking is down and asthma is less prevalent than it was earlier in the decade.
