Deep brain stimulation improves OCD symptoms, promotes smoking cessation and weight loss

Electrical stimulation of the brain in a patient with severe obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) led to some unanticipated benefits—"effortless" smoking cessation and weight loss, according to a case report in the September issue of Neurosurgery, official journal of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons.

NPS Pharmaceuticals closes public offering of 7,912,000 common stock shares

NPS Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced the closing of a public offering of 7,912,000 shares of its common stock, including 1,032,000 shares sold pursuant to the full exercise of an overallotment option previously granted to the underwriters. Net proceeds were approximately $44.4 million after deducting underwriting discounts and estimated offering expenses. Jefferies & Company, Inc. acted as the sole book-running manager and Canaccord Genuity Inc. acted as co-lead manager for the offering.

Echo commences development of new transdermal biosensor for continuous lactate monitoring

Echo Therapeutics, Inc., a company developing its needle-free Symphony™ tCGM System as a non-invasive, wireless, transdermal continuous glucose monitoring system and its Prelude™ SkinPrep System for transdermal drug delivery, today announced that it is beginning a development program designed to create a new transdermal biosensor for continuous lactate monitoring to be used in critical care and sports medicine.

Childhood obesity linked to common cold virus

A new study has shown that obese children are more prone to carrying a common cold virus than slimmer children. The virus in question is adenovirus 36 and if the link is true then someday new obesity treatments might be tailored to attack the virus to treat or prevent childhood obesity. Childhood obesity affects 17% of American children and adolescents. The report appeared in the journal Pediatrics.

High-intensity exercise video game to improve health of middle aged men

Sedentary middle-aged men on Teesside in the North East of England could soon be using a high-intensity exercise video game to improve their health. For researchers at Teesside University have developed an alternative to the Nintendo Wii which doesn't allow users to cheat. Now they plan to put it to the test by getting middle-aged members of workingmen's clubs to take part in 'virtual' boxing matches with a computer-generated opponent.
