"European governments grappling to reduce large budget deficits are focusing their cost-cutting on a large spending item — pharmaceuticals," The Wall Street Journal reports. "Several countries in recent weeks, including Spain, Germany and Italy, have proposed or enacted reductions in what they will pay or taken other cost-control measures for various drugs.

FDA approves Perrigo's ANDA for OTC Miconazole Nitrate Vaginal Cream and Suppository

Perrigo Company today announced that it has received final approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for its abbreviated new drug application for over-the-counter (OTC) Miconazole Nitrate Vaginal Cream and Suppository, a generic to Monistat® -1 Combination Pack. Perrigo expects to begin shipping immediately.

Mass. insurers ask for double-digit rate hikes, again

Massachusetts' two largest insurers have again asked regulators for permission to increase their rates. "Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, the state's biggest health insurer, is requesting increases averaging 12 percent, on the lower end of the range it submitted earlier in the spring. Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, the number two carrier, wants increases that range from 8.8 percent to 11.9 percent, about the same range it sought in the round that was rejected" (Weisman, 6/3).

FDA issues letter directing GSK to revise product labeling for Serevent and Advair

GlaxoSmithKline today announced that it has received a letter from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration directing revisions to product labeling for its respiratory products Serevent and Advair. The letter concludes discussions between GSK and the agency following FDA advisory committee meetings regarding the safety profile of long-acting beta2-agonists in the treatment of asthma, including salmeterol, the active ingredient in Serevent and one of the active ingredients in Advair.

The National Institutes of Health has awarded scientists at Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University a five-year, $3.9 million grant to study how extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis is transmitted in rural South Africa. Here's another reason to breast feed your baby: Canadian researchers have discovered how a probiotic found in breast milk reduces or eliminates painful cramping in the gut. In a new research report published online in the FASEB Journal, these scientists use mice to show that a specific strain of Lactobacillus reuteri decreases the force of muscle contractions in the gut within minutes of exposure.
