Teleflex enters into definitive agreement to sell its SSI Surgical Services for $25 million

Teleflex Incorporated, a leading global provider of medical technology products, today announced that it has entered into a definitive agreement to sell its SSI Surgical Services Inc. business to a privately-owned multi-service line healthcare company for approximately $25 million. The transaction is subject to customary closing conditions and is expected to close before the end of the first quarter of 2010.

Healthcare industries pay millions to summit invitees, says CREW’s study

On the eve of President Obama’s health care reform summit, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) released data showing that since 2005, health care special interests have invested at least $28 million in the campaigns of House and Senate leaders, chairs and ranking members of committees with primary jurisdiction over health care legislation. Additionally, President Obama received over $18.6 million during his presidential campaign.

HealthGrades America’s 50 Best Hospitals for 2010 identified

The HealthGrades America’s 50 Best Hospitals for 2010 were identified in a report issued today by the leading independent healthcare ratings organization. The analysis, which examined objective patient outcomes over three years at all 5,000 of the nation’s nonfederal hospitals, found that the 50 Best Hospitals had mortality rates that were, on average, 27% lower than other hospitals.

Congressman Chaka Fattah (D-PA) shot back today at what he called "baloney" coming from Washington Republicans: "Every step along the way these nattering nabobs of negativity have said we couldn't get it done. They said we would never move a bill out of Energy and Commerce. They said the Senate Finance Committee would never report a bill. Asymptomatic pancreatic cyst treatment: UCLA-Veterans Affairs research team develops evaluation tool

As a result of improved imaging technology, pancreatic cysts are increasingly diagnosed in asymptomatic individuals who undergo scans for other reasons. And while most of these cysts follow a benign course, a small but significant number are either malignant at the time of diagnosis or have the potential to develop into pancreatic cancer during a patient's lifetime.
