Diet soft drink consumption may increase risk of vascular events

Individuals who drink diet soft drinks on a daily basis may be at increased risk of suffering vascular events such as stroke, heart attack, and vascular death. According to researchers at Johns Hopkins University physicians with normal body mass index or weight-to-height ratios are more likely to discuss weight loss with patients than overweight doctors.

Dairy products help weight loss: Study

For these findings the researchers reviewed 14 clinical trials involving 883 adults. The trials looked at how eating dairy food impacted on people's weight, body fat, waistlines and lean muscle mass. In the study published in the International Journal of Obesity, the authors said they wanted to reveal more about the relationship between weight loss and dairy consumption.

Free of coronary heart disease at the beginning of the study, they were asked what they ate and what cooking methods they used, then were tracked to see who developed coronary heart disease and who died.

Revised menus for school lunches with more fruits and veggies

American schoolchildren are accustomed to a steady diet of pizza and french fries for school lunches. Now they will find more fruits, vegetables and whole grains on their cafeteria trays under new government school lunch rules announced on Wednesday. Apart from adding double the produce servings the guidelines also call for fat-free and low-fat milk only, child-appropriate portion sizes and reductions in sodium, saturated fat and trans fats.

Brown fat is something that occurs more in thin people than fat, younger people than older and young women than men. It is brown in color and a new study finds that one form of it, which is turned on in cold climates can burn calories from elsewhere in the body to keep the body warm. Another new study finds that a second form of brown fat can be created from ordinary white fat by exercise.
