Visceral fat can increase fracture risk in obese teenage girls

According to a new study accepted for publication in The Endocrine Society's Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism (JCEM), obese teenage girls with a greater ratio of visceral fat (fat around internal organs) to subcutaneous fat (fat found just beneath the skin) are likely to have lower bone density than peers with a lower ratio of visceral to subcutaneous fat.

FDA accepts for filing VIVUS' Qnexa NDA

VIVUS, Inc. today announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has accepted for filing the company's new drug application (NDA) for its investigational drug, Qnexa®, for the treatment of obesity. The target date for the FDA to complete its review of the Qnexa NDA is October 28, 2010.

A study in the March 1 issue of the journal SLEEP shows that African-American and Hispanic young adults with short or long sleep durations had greater increases in belly fat over a five-year period compared with those who reported sleeping six to seven hours a night.

African-Americans more likely to have highest stroke rate compared with Caucasians

African-Americans age 65 and younger are more than twice as likely to have a stroke compared with Caucasians in any region, and people who have a stroke are more likely to die in the South than elsewhere, according to researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Public Health.

Arena Pharmaceuticals, Inc. announced today that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has assigned a Prescription Drug User Fee Act (PDUFA) date of October 22, 2010, for the review of the lorcaserin New Drug Application (NDA). The acceptance of the lorcaserin NDA filing confirms that the application is sufficiently complete to permit a substantive review, and the PDUFA date is the goal date for the FDA to complete its review of the NDA.

When it comes to stroke prevalence, it appears that the gender gap is widening. Vanda Pharmaceuticals Inc. announced today that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has issued a notice of allowance for its patent application of a microsphere, long-acting injectable formulation of its antipsychotic product, Fanapt™ (iloperidone). When issued, this U.S. patent will expire on October 30, 2022, and in addition, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has granted a patent term adjustment of 300 days, leading to an effective expiration date of August 26, 2023.
