OSI Pharmaceuticals, Inc. announced today that its international partner for Tarceva® (erlotinib), Roche, informed OSI that the European Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use has issued a positive opinion recommending approval of Tarceva as monotherapy for maintenance treatment in patients with locally advanced or metastatic non-small cell lung cancer with stable disease following four cycles of standard platinum-based first-line chemotherapy.

Study reveals higher-than-normal blood levels of fructose in pancreatic cancer patients

Patients with pancreatic cancer have higher-than-normal blood levels of the refined sugar fructose, according to a recent study in the journal Pancreas, official journal of the American Pancreatic Association and the Japan Pancreas Society. The journal is published by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, a part of Wolters Kluwer Health, a leading provider of information and business intelligence for students, professionals, and institutions in medicine, nursing, allied health, and pharmacy.

Kaiser Permanente study: Snapshot of the prevalence of extreme obesity in younger children

Extreme obesity is affecting more children at younger ages, with 12 percent of black teenage girls, 11.2 percent of Hispanic teenage boys, 7.3 percent of boys and 5.5 percent of girls now classified as extremely obese, according to a Kaiser Permanente study of 710,949 children and teens that appears online in the Journal of Pediatrics.
