Celgene, GELA to conduct REVLIMID/rituximab combination study on newly diagnosed FL

Groupe d'Etude des Lymphomes de l'Adulte (GELA) and Celgene International Sarl today announced a collaboration to conduct an international randomized study to evaluate the therapeutic potential of the REVLIMID/rituximab combination regimen (R2) in patients with newly diagnosed follicular lymphoma.

VIVUS Avanafil phase 3 trial on erectile dysfunction meets primary endpoints

VIVUS, Inc. today announced that the positive results from REVIVE-RP, a phase 3 clinical trial evaluating the safety and efficacy of the investigational drug avanafil for the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED),will be presented this afternoon at the 2011 Cancer Survivorship and Sexual Health Symposium in Washington D.C.

Eating disorders and abuse may increase likelihood of pregnancy and postpartum depression

One in 10 women experience depression during pregnancy or shortly after giving birth. Although the problem has received increased attention in recent years, little is known about the causes or early-warning signs of pregnancy-related depression. In a study published in the June 2011 issue of Journal of Women's Health, researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine offer new clues to help doctors identify at-risk patients and refer them to treatment early on.

REVLIMID-R-CHOP Phase I/II data in untreated DLBCL presented at malignant lymphoma conference

Celgene International Sàrl announced that clinical data from two studies evaluating the use of REVLIMID® (lenalidomide) with standard R-CHOP chemotherapy in patients with untreated diffuse large B cell (DLBCL) or grade 3 follicular lymphoma were presented at the 11th International Conference on Malignant Lymphoma in Lugano, Switzerland.

Roundup: Few states raise taxes to ease budgets; Ala. Gov. signs abortion law; Texas House advances bill to turn Medicaid, Medicare into block grants

As 2011 began, the budget situation in state capitals looked more dire than just about anybody could remember. ... With Medicaid, the states had their hands tied. The new federal health care law prohibits states from cutting eligibility or making it harder for people to apply for coverage. So states had to find other ways to control costs. Idaho reduced the amount paid to hospitals and doctors to treat Medicaid patients, an idea that some 30 governors proposed this year.

Low testosterone linked to varicoceles

As many as 15 percent of men have varicoceles, masses of enlarged and dilated veins in the testicles. There is new evidence that varicoceles, long known to be a cause of male infertility, interfere with the production of testosterone -- a crucial hormone to maintaining men's health. There is good news too: Microsurgery can increase testosterone levels in these men. Results of new research by physician-scientists at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center are in a recent edition of BJU International.

A new report from the state Division of Health Care Finance and Policy shows that: ... "Spending per member on privately insured people grew 6 percent from 2007 to 2008 and another 10 percent from 2008 to 2009. This rate of growth was substantially higher than the increase in national personal health care expenditures per capita of 4.6 percent from 2008 to 2009. Spending by private payers also grew faster than spending by public payers".

In a new study -- the first of its kind -- researchers at Weill Cornell Medical College found that the number and magnitude of events resulting from medical errors is surprisingly similar inside and outside hospital walls.

A 56-year-old mother hopes to become the first woman to have her womb transplanted into her daughter. Eva Ottoson who lives in Nottinghamshire has agreed to take part in the medical procedure that would see her donate her uterus to her daughter.
