Ted and Jane Von Voigtlander Foundation gifts $15 million to University of Michigan Health System

The University of Michigan Health System has received a $15 million gift from the Ted and Jane Von Voigtlander Foundation, the largest gift ever made to the Health System for women's health. It will support the construction of a new women's hospital.

Premature newborn boys have poorer prognosis compared to newborn girls, says study

Among premature births - children born before the 37th week of pregnancy - newborn boys have a poorer prognosis than newborn girls. In her dissertation at Lund University in Sweden, the physician Emma Elsmén Steen has explored why male gender constitutes a risk factor for greater morbidity in these infants.

Genentech announces Phase III study of Avastin in women treated with chemotherapy for advanced breast cancer

Genentech, Inc., a wholly owned member of the Roche Group, today announced results from a Phase III study (RIBBON 2) of Avastin® (bevacizumab) in women who had previously been treated with initial (first-line) chemotherapy for advanced HER2-negative breast cancer and needed additional (second-line) treatment.

Combination therapy improves overall survival in women with advanced breast cancer

In a clinical study, women with an aggressive form of breast cancer experienced a median survival of 14 months when treated with an investigational combination of TYKERB® (lapatinib) plus HERCEPTIN® (trastuzumab). The results of the Phase III study in HER2-positive metastatic breast cancer were presented during the 32nd Annual CTRC-AACR San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium, held in San Antonio, Texas (Dec. 9 - 13).

Study examines the association of BRCA1 gene, infertility and breast/ovarian cancer

In a study published online this week in the leading cancer journal, Journal of Clinical Oncology, Westchester Medical Center Physician Dr. Kutluk Oktay, MD, Director, Division of Reproductive Medicine & Infertility concluded that mutations in the BRCA1 gene (gene associated with early onset breast cancer) are associated with early diminishment of egg reserve.

March of Dimes poll finds majority of pregnant women worry about birth defects

The March of Dimes polled about 1,200 moms to find out exactly what it is that caused them to lose sleep (other than the fact they were pregnant!) while they were pregnant. The results were presented today at the March of Dimes National Communications Advisory Council luncheon where experienced, practicing obstetricians and gynecologists discussed the survey results, as well as some of the frequently asked questions their patients ask.

GSK updates long-term survival data of BEXXAR Therapeutic Regimen for Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma

GlaxoSmithKline announced today updated long-term survival data from two Phase II studies of BEXXAR® (tositumomab and iodine I-131 tositumomab) used in either patients with previously untreated cancer of the immune system (follicular lymphoma) or in patients with cancer of the lymphocytes (non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, NHL) that no longer responded to rituximab.
