New research published in Diabetologia (the journal of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes) suggests that Sweden-the country already thought to have the second highest prevalence of type 1 diabetes in the world-could have 2-3 times more adolescents and young adults with type 1 diabetes than previously estimated.

However, until now, there has been a lack of high quality, randomized controlled trial evidence to prove that lifestyle interventions prevent deaths from cardiovascular disease, such as heart attacks and stroke, in these people.

Scientists find that ingredients in chocolate may help prevent obesity

The potential health benefits of dark chocolate keep piling up, and scientists are now homing in on what ingredients in chocolate might help prevent obesity, as well as type-2 diabetes. They found that one particular type of antioxidant in cocoa prevented laboratory mice from gaining excess weight and lowered their blood sugar levels. The report appears in ACS' Journal of Agricultural & Food Chemistry.
