Social security benefits likely will not increase in 2010, would have 'major implications' on Medicare Parts B, D

The Obama administration and the Congressional Budget Office have indicated that Social Security beneficiaries will not receive a cost-of-living increase in 2010 or 2011, which would have "major implications for Medicare," the New York Times reports.

Social Security typically increases benefits annually to keep up with rising prices of consumer goods; however, the current economic recession, coupled with other factors, has resulted in low inflation, which likely will result in the lack of a cost-of-living increase. Federal law stipulates that most Social Security beneficiaries cannot have their Medicare Part B premiums increase by more than the dollar amount of the cost-of-living increase in their Social Security checks.

As a result, about 75% of beneficiaries' Medicare Part B premiums will remain the same. However, about 25% of Medicare beneficiaries are not protected by this law and could see their premiums increase. According to the Times, most Medicare beneficiaries pay a monthly Part B premium of $96.40. CBO estimates the basic premium will rise to $119 next year and to $123 in 2011 for those not protected by the law. In addition, the Times reports that millions of beneficiaries also could experience higher premiums for drug coverage under Medicare Part D because there are no laws that prevent such an increase.

David Certner, legislative counsel at AARP, said, "If, as expected, there is no COLA in Social Security next year but premiums for drug coverage increase, as expected, millions of beneficiaries will see their Social Security checks reduced for the first time" (Pear, New York Times, 5/3).

I can not believe that the Government can bail out all the big companies and let the poor people, who really need the money, just make due. People on social security are just scrimping by with their social security. We aren't going to take a trip if we got our increase. I am ashamed that I voted for the President. I thought for sure he was going to help the little people. Will he get a cost of living raise???? Shame on you President Obama.

I'm sure there are so many SSDI & SSDI Recipients who will be struggling even more next year should we not receive this increase.

I ask that the Obama administration to remember, that we all are dealing with our country's recession. But our rent will increase, our utilities will increase, and food is not getting any cheaper.  We need to consider how everything is going up and nothing is coming down.  We can not tell our landlords not to raise our rents, or tell the supermarkets to stop raising the prices on food, & clothing.  We are all facing trying times and people not receiving their cost of living increase only make it more difficult for people to live.  I ask that the Obama administration rethink this cost of living adjustment were it will be benefit everyone involved.      Ms. R. Bostick

Tell ONE BIG ASS MISTAKE AMERICA that people that voted for him are very sorry they did.  Tell GM, AGI, to come up with our cost of living raises plus, can GM workers live on what I get for Social Security?  What I make in as month a worker for GM makes double that amount in 40 hours.

So it looks like if American's don't what OMABA's health care bill we that draw Social Security will have to pay the penality.
Get rid of the SSI and Medicade for people that are not born in the USA. and/or can't speak English!

They can't give a cost of living raise but they sure can waste it on everything else like that stupid health care reform, GM, Banks and anything else they want to waste money on. He sure won't get my vote in 2012 or nor will any other Democrat!

In the presidential campaign of 2008, then-Senator and nominee Barack Obama promised "Change we can believe in". As expected, change is coming, but we certainly can't, or shouldn't believe in it, as it will surely be the downfall of our country. To be fair to our President though, it really doesn't matter who is in office. Regardless, the government continues to write checks to irresponsible corporate giants, while everyday people who need help get little or nothing. God forbid if the politicians in Washington, though there are a few exceptions, would worry about someone other than themselves, the banks or the labor union-backed auto industry. If the American people really want "change we can believe in", start holding all politicians, regardless of party, responsible for their actions and above all, remember that all politicians, regardless of the office they hold, work for their constituents, NOT the other way around. Keeping the aforementioned in mind, if voters acted accordingly, necessary and meaningful change would come, and that is something we can all believe in.

I can't stand to see how people out in this world are going to live, what will people do when others out there start going crazy. We need more money because the cost of living is going up and no one is seeing this. Gas, food etc, what are we going to do?
