At a press conference held in Coral Gables September 1st, 2009, Centro Mater Foundation's president, Ana Ortega, announced details of the organization's alliance with Navarro Discount Pharmacies. Centro Mater is a non profit organization that provides education and care for children from six weeks to 12 years of age. The organization was founded in 1969 and currently has five centers in Miami-Dade County - two in Hialeah, two in Little Havana, and one in Hialeah Gardens. Navarro Discount Pharmacies is the largest Hispanic pharmacy chain in the United States.

When Centro Mater Foundation's Board of Directors called Navarro's headquarters to request a meeting, they immediately got one. And when they asked for Navarro's support in raising funds for urgently needed scholarships, management's response came swiftly: "Absolutely!" Ortega said, "This is great news for Centro Mater, Navarro Discount Pharmacies and their employees have opened their hearts to our children." In addition to opening their hearts, all 28 Navarro Discount Pharmacies have also opened their doors. More than 200 Centro Mater collection boxes will be placed at check out counters in Navarro pharmacies throughout Miami Dade. "Your Change can Change Their Future" is the message Navarro is helping Centro Mater spread. Given the current financial climate, Centro Mater is asking shoppers to drop their change in their collection boxes.

At the press conference it was emphasized that one hundred percent of the funds collected at Navarro Discount Pharmacies will go directly to meet the needs of single parents and low income families who need assistance in covering the cost of childcare.

In addition to raising funds, Navarro will help Centro Mater build awareness. The organization has been around for 40 years, but there are a significant number of people who are not familiar with the important role they play in our community. Centro Mater empowers families through childcare and education, their noble mission is to care for children so parents can work.
