Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation focuses on effective cancer treatment

The Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF) today announced that American figure skating legend and Olympic gold medalist Scott Hamilton will serve as Master of Ceremonies at the 13^th Annual MMRF Fall Gala, on Saturday, Oct. 24, 2009, at the Hyatt Regency in Greenwich, Conn. This will mark Hamilton’s second appearance at the annual Gala. Hamilton received the MMRF Spirit of Hope Award in 2002.

“We are thrilled that Scott, a dear friend and generous supporter of the MMRF, will join us as Master of Ceremonies this year, said Kathy Giusti, founder and CEO of the MMRF and a myeloma patient. “His commitment to advance cancer research is truly incredible and is matched only by his extraordinary ability to reach and inspire other patients and families living with cancer with his personal triumph over with metastatic brain cancer.”

Following a successful Olympic and professional career in figure skating, Hamilton was diagnosed with testicular cancer in 1997. His inspiring recovery and skating comeback was capped with a CBS Television Network Special “Scott Hamilton, Back on Ice.”

“I have proudly supported the MMRF’s work for many years, and it is a tremendous honor to serve as Master of Ceremonies for the 13^th Annual MMRF Fall Gala,” said Hamilton. “Their approach to cancer research – with its focus on speed and results – is a model for other groups to follow and will no doubt result in the faster development of new treatments.”

The MMRF will also be honoring Hoda Kotb, co-anchor of “TODAY” and “NBC Dateline” correspondent, with the Spirit of Hope Award for her outstanding efforts to raise cancer awareness through the telling of her personal journey with breast cancer. Boomer Esiason, former NFL Quarterback and “NFL Today” analyst, will deliver the evening’s keynote address.
