Edward D. Miller was named chief executive officer of Johns Hopkins Medicine, the 13th dean of The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and vice president for medicine of The Johns Hopkins University in January 1997.

Under his aegis, both The Johns Hopkins Hospital and school of medicine continue to be ranked among the very best in the nation by U.S. News & World Report, and the school continues to rank tops in National Institutes of Health research funding. As part of Dr. Miller's vision to improve access to Johns Hopkins Medicine through the development of a regional, integrated health care delivery system, Howard County General Hospital, strategically located between Baltimore and Washington, D.C., and Suburban Hospital, located in Bethesda, Md., were acquired and integrated into Johns Hopkins Medicine. In addition, several highly successful suburban outpatient centers were constructed and strategic affiliations were formed with other area hospitals. Dr. Miller also greatly broadened Johns Hopkins Medicine's presence outside the United States with the creation of Johns Hopkins International, forging links with governments, health care consortia, physician groups and academic institutions in more than 40 countries.

Ronald R. Peterson

Ronald R. Peterson is president of The Johns Hopkins Hospital and Health System, and executive vice president of Johns Hopkins Medicine—the umbrella organization uniting the health system and the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. As president of the health system, he provides senior oversight for Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center and Howard County General Hospital. He also serves as chairman of Johns Hopkins Community Physicians, which provides ambulatory care at 18 centers throughout Maryland, and as a trustee of the Johns Hopkins Home Care Group.

In 1982, Mr. Peterson began transforming the financially troubled Baltimore City Hospitals into what is now known as Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, directing a $100 million physical redevelopment program and turning a $7 million a year loss under city ownership into a positive bottom line averaging $5 million a year. He served as president of the medical center from 1984 to 1999.

In 1995, Mr. Peterson was named executive vice president and chief operating officer of Johns Hopkins Health System. He was named acting president of The Johns Hopkins Hospital and Health System in September 1996, positions that were made permanent in December 1996 and February 1997, respectively.

A professor of medicine, pathology, oncology and cell biology with a joint appointment in molecular biology and genetics, Chi Van Dang oversees Johns Hopkins' Institute for Cell Engineering. Dr. Pronovost has won several national awards for his research, including the 2004 John Eisenberg Patient Safety Research Award. In 2008, he was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship, known popularly as the "genius grant." Time magazine named him one of the world's 100 "most influential people" in 2008 for his work in patient safety.

As president of Johns Hopkins HealthCare, LLC, a managed care organization owned by the Johns Hopkins Health System and the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Patricia Brown is responsible for the administration of all Johns Hopkins managed care products for 200,000 individuals enrolled in self-funded employer, Medicaid and Department of Defense health benefit plans. She is also responsible for integrating and coordinating managed care contracting and payer and market strategy for all Johns Hopkins Medicine entities, including The Johns Hopkins Hospital, Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, Howard County General Hospital, Suburban Hospital, the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and Johns Hopkins Community Physicians. As senior counsel for the Johns Hopkins Health System, she provides legal advice in the areas of managed care and regulatory compliance.

Before joining Johns Hopkins in 1994, Ms. Brown was an assistant attorney general with the Maryland Office of the Attorney General, Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, serving as counsel to the Maryland Medical Assistance Program, the Maryland Health Resources Planning Commission and the Maryland Board of Dental Examiners. She chairs the board of Chesapeake Regional Information System for Our Patients, a consortium of health care systems committed to developing a health care information exchange in the region.
