Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine and Marcella Niehoff School of Nursing students are teaming up with high schoolers from Cristo Rey Jesuit High School (CRJHS) to bring awareness and share ideas about health care now and in the future.
The conference and health fair, Just Healing: The Faces of Healthcare, is a dialogue regarding health care professions and strategies to advocate for the health of the Pilsen and Little Village communities. Conference speakers include Jesus "Manny" Estrada, MD, and Lourdes Gomez Villaume, MD. Breakout sessions also will be held to encourage idea sharing and advocacy.
"The high school students are really taking the lead on many of these projects and we have a lot to learn from them about their community and how we can bridge gaps. It also gives us a window into how the next generation views health care," said Aleta Simmons, second-year medical student and student chair of the event.
CRJHS students worked closely with Loyola medical and nursing students to create health fair booths that would directly serve the needs of their community.
"The experience exposed the high schoolers to different aspects of healthcare and gives the Loyola students insight into the unique needs of the Hispanic community which they will take with them as they serve in the medical field," said Mark Kuczewski, director of the Loyola University Chicago Neiswanger Institute for Bioethics and Health Policy. "Our medical and nursing students are wonderful advocates for the community. We hope through this event relationships are formed."
In conjunction with the conference CRJHS students wrote essays and created art projects giving their insights and views on health care. The winners will be announced during the event.
